About the game

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

This third-person action-adventure in the A Plague Tale series starts from a plunderer named Sophia, an island tied to the Minotaur myth and an ancient curse beneath the medieval world. Where Innocence and Requiem leaned on stealth and swarms of rats, this entry hands Sophia a sword and a grappling hook and leaves the rats out entirely. Puzzles built around redirected light and a few stealth sequences fill the space between fights, and the campaign is strictly single-player.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

  1. Greek myth built into the level design. The labyrinth, the Minotaur's island and Daedalus's machinery are places Sophia walks through, not names dropped into dialogue.
  2. Asobo's first sword-fighting system. The studio used Ghost of Tsushima as its blueprint and studied Sekiro and Sifu, then eased off an early version that came out harder than intended, aiming the final design at players who have never touched a soulslike.
  3. A score with a regional sound. Olivier Derivière, composer of the earlier games, worked with a Cyprus-based choir and instruments such as the yaylı tambur and rebab.

Story and Lore

Set fifteen years before A Plague Tale: Requiem, the story follows Sophia, a plunderer who wants to know how her family connects to the Minotaur's Island. Getting there means surviving the island's trials while an army follows close behind.

Two timelines run in parallel. In the Middle Ages, Sophia pushes through the island's ruins while her pursuers close in. Through a link she has with the place, she also sees the Minoan era, and what happened there carries through to the present.

The Prima Macula, the supernatural affliction that runs through the whole series, gets an ancestral backstory in this entry. The menace on the island is made of shadow, with black tendrils and a creature that are both weakened by light.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Fights revolve around blocking and parrying. Parries and chained attacks build up an enemy's stun meter, and a full meter opens the way to a heavy Critical Strike. Sophia fights with a sword and dagger, and the further swords she finds each carry an effect that boosts one of her talents. The grappling hook pulls enemies into reach or throws them into environmental hazards, and loose objects can be thrown to stun. Enemy types range from standard foes to nimble, shielded, spear-wielding and heavy ones.

Light is the main puzzle tool. A Minoan sphere redirects beams to open light-operated doors and show hidden symbols, mirrors appear often and are used in increasingly elaborate ways, and some rooms combine several light sources that need precise positioning. Sophia's notebook stores clues, while the level layout supplies most of the rest in place of tutorial prompts.

  • Stealth is now limited to creature encounters. Sophia leaves a glowing trail unless she crouch-walks, and she has to stay behind cover whenever the creature stops to sniff the air. Later areas dim the light or remove it altogether.
  • Side paths branching off each chapter hide collectibles, and the charms and blades among them affect combat.

Characters and Factions

The cast splits between people Sophia knows and figures pulled from Minoan legend.

  • Sophia: the playable protagonist, a plunderer by trade who first appeared in Requiem.
  • Leni: Sophia's friend, who travels with her and helps in fights and with doors and levers.
  • Faro: leader of the bandit crew Sophia used to run with, and now one of the people after her.
  • Alec: Sophia's father, also a bandit leader, who died on an expedition.
  • Theseus: the hero of Greek legend, met deep on the island, who ends up fighting on Sophia's side.
  • The Minoan royal house: King Minos, his daughter Ariadne and Asterion, the imprisoned Minotaur of myth, with Daedalus as the inventor behind the island's mechanisms.

Three groups drive the conflict: Faro's bandits, the Venetian army that follows Sophia to the island, and the Minoan court under Minos, whose labyrinth sits at the center of the island's history.

Editions

Only one edition of the game exists: the Standard Edition, which Focus Entertainment lists as the sole release across PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, and the console versions are also sold on physical discs.
