About the game

Overview and Introduction

Valheim is a single-player and cooperative open-world survival and exploration game developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. Built on the Unity engine, the game transports players to a procedurally generated tenth realm inspired by Norse mythology, where fallen Viking warriors must prove their worthiness to Odin.

Players begin their journey with minimal gear in peaceful meadows, steadily advancing by harvesting resources, constructing bases, forging weapons, brewing meads, and defeating powerful bosses known as the Forsaken

  • Core Pillars of Valheim:
    • Procedurally Generated Tenth Realm: Explore vast, unique worlds featuring dynamic weather, day-night cycles, ocean navigation, and distinct biomes.
    • Deep Building and Crafting Systems: Construct shelters, elaborate Viking longhouses, and fortified castles using a structural stability system while managing fire and smoke indoors.
    • Stamina-Based Tactical Combat: Master dodge rolls, parries, block angles, and a wide array of melee weapons, bows, and magical staves.
    • 10-Player Cooperative Multiplayer: Team up with up to 10 players on player-hosted or dedicated servers with full cross-platform play.

Top 3 Reasons to Play Valheim

Valheim delivers an engaging survival-crafting loop by balancing rewarding progression with atmospheric exploration.

  • Atmospheric Norse Open World: Combines a stylized retro-inspired aesthetic with modern volumetric lighting, dynamic weather systems, and an evocative soundtrack.

Story, Lore, and World

Set in a procedurally generated tenth world, players gather resources, build fortified settlements, craft weapons, and battle mythical creatures.

Lore and Environmental Storytelling

  • Odin’s Mandate: Fallen warriors are sent to Valheim to defeat the creatures Odin banished there and prove themselves worthy.
  • Runestones: Scattered across biomes, ancient runestones reveal lore about fallen warriors, gods, and environmental hazards.
  • Diverse Biomes:
    • Meadows: Peaceful starting grounds rich in wood, stone, deer, and raspberries.
    • Black Forest: Densely forested region inhabited by Greydwarfs and Trolls, containing Copper and Tin ores and Pine trees for Core Wood.
    • Swamp: Waterlogged, treacherous terrain filled with Draugr, Skeletons, and Surtlings, yielding Iron ore inside Sunken Crypts.
    • Mountains: Freezing peaks inhabited by Wolves, Drakes, and Fenrings, containing Silver ore and Obsidian.
    • Plains: Arid grasslands dominated by Fulings and Lox, home to Barley, Flax, and Black Metal scraps.
    • Mistlands: Fog-shrouded biome featuring ancient ruins, Seekers, Eitr magic resources, and black marble.
    • Ashlands & Deep North: Extreme fiery and frozen biomes featuring late-game challenges, unique enemies, and new resources.

Gameplay, Combat, and Mechanics

Gameplay combines survival resource management, tactical combat, nautical navigation, and base construction.

Core Mechanics

  • Stamina and Food System: Players do not starve to death; instead, consuming up to three distinct food items boosts maximum health, stamina pools, and health regeneration rates.
  • Structural Building & Physics: Buildings rely on a structural stability system, while indoor fires require proper ventilation to prevent smoke from accumulating.
  • Weaponry & Magic: Wield swords, axes, maces, polearms, bows, shields, and late-game Eitr-infused elemental staves. Repeated weapon usage increases character skill proficiency levels.
  • Sailing & Exploration: Craft rafts, Karves, and Longships to cross vast oceans, battle Sea Serpents, and transport non-teleportable metal ores back to base.

Main Bosses (The Forsaken)

Defeating each Forsaken boss rewards players with a trophy to hang at the sacrificial stones for unique active buffs, alongside key items needed to progress into the next biome tier.

Biome Guardians

  • Eikthyr: A giant stag in the Meadows; drops Hard Antlers to craft the first pickaxe.
  • The Elder: A massive tree entity in the Black Forest; drops the Swamp Key to unlock Sunken Crypts.
  • Bonemass: A toxic sludge abomination in the Swamp; drops the Wishbone to locate hidden Silver and treasure.
  • Moder: A dragon queen in the Mountains; drops Dragon Tears to build the Artisan Table for advanced crafting.
  • Yagluth: A giant skeletal sorcerer in the Plains; drops Torn Spirits used to craft the Galdr Table.
  • The Queen: A colossal insectoid matriarch in the Mistlands and one of the game's major late-game bosses.
