Thanks to George A. Romero's horror movies, zombies became one of the pop culture's most beloved monsters. These relentless living dead try to eat brains in countless movies, TV shows, novels, and video games. To celebrate the release of the PC version of Days Gone, we've got for you a collection of games allowing us to fight an undead scourge. There is Dying Light: The Following, The Walking Dead, DayZ, Left 4 Dead, games of the Resident Evil series, and many more.
George A. Romero revolutionized the horror genre. Thanks to his 1968 movie Night of the Living Dead and its sequels, zombies have become one of the most prominent fictional monsters. Moreover, thanks to Romero, these undead creatures were no longer connected with Voodoo magic.
Over the years, we've had tons of different zombie versions, different from Romero's original vision. There were fast zombies, nazi zombies, exploding zombies, and many, many more. Thanks to Shaun of the Dead horror comedy, we know that we can even play video games with zombies.
Furthermore, Zombies have played a crucial role in numerous video games. One of the first releases containing brain-eaters is Entombed, The Evil Dead, Realm of Impossibility, and Zombie Zombie from the early 80s.
Although zombie popularity has faded over the years, the Resident Evil series helped them return to the mainstream. Furthermore, the Capcom series presented a scientific approach to the origin of the undead plague. According to the game's plot, the t-Virus developed by Umbrella Corporation was responsible for changing people into brainless monsters.
Zombies are a common enemy in many shooters and survival horrors, including Left 4 Dead, Dying Light, or Killing Floor. We can find them even in some no monsters-related games, such as the Call of Duty franchise. Most of the newest installments in the series feature the Zombie mode, which is very popular.
Interestingly, zombies can be found in adventure games. The best example is The Walking Dead, developed by Telltale Games. It's an episodic video game based on a famous comic book series.
Furthermore, not every zombie-like monster is a zombie. The Days Gone creators have multiple times underlined that the enemies in their game are unique creatures called the freakers. The freakers are people changed into deadly monstrosities because of a mysterious pandemic. So technically, they are no undead, and they can't infect people by biting them.
