The very first licensed Star Wars video game was Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back from 1982. Since its premiere, dozens of Star Wars games have been released. They covered virtually every possible platform and genre. 

At first, video games only reflected events from the movies. Over time developers started to expand the universe created by George Lucas. Therefore, many of the great Star Wars stories and exciting characters originate from video games. For example, Kyle Katarn - the protagonist of many Star Wars shooters, including Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and Jedi Outcast. Also, Galen Marek, known as Starkiller, became one of the fans' favorites. We also have to mention Dash Rendar, a protagonist of the Shadows of the Empire game. SotE was a very ambitious multimedia project created by Lucasfilm. It covered the story between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Besides the video game, the project included a comic book, trading cards, toys, and a novel. Moreover, among Star Wars games, we also find exceptional RPGs - Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. There are plenty of original characters in both of them, such as Darth Revan Bastila Shan, Darth Malak, and Vandar Tokare, to mention only a few.

Importantly, Star Wars video games can still introduce compelling characters. The best examples are Iden Versio from Battlefront II and Cal Kestis, the protagonist of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Star Wars games also played a crucial role in the development of the space flight simulation genre. Games such as X-Wing and TIE Fighter set high standards. Star Wars: Squadrons is the newest Star Wars' take on space sims. 

Star Wars franchise connects generations. And also, among Star Wars video games, we find releases that can be played by young and older gamers together. Of course, we're talking about the TT Games' Lego Star Wars series. It includes such classics as The Complete Saga, The Clone Wars, The Force Awakens, and the upcoming Skywalker Saga.

If you're looking for a slightly different challenge, you may pick great strategy games (Galactic Battlegrounds or Empire at War). And even a racing game allowing to participate in famous podraces featured in The Phantom Menace (Star Wars Episode I: Racer).

There are also some unusual takes on Star Wars in video games, such as Journey to Batuu pack for Sims 4. This expansion allows players to visit the distant planet of Batu, meet Star Wars characters including Rey, Kylo Ren, and Hondo Ohnaka, complete quests for them, and even build their lightsabre.
