Computer software is a set of instructions that can be used to direct a computer's operations and ultimately automate certain processes. Unlike computer hardware, which is tangible, software exists only in the form of files within the computer's memory. The software can take many forms, including applications, operating systems that manage the data flow throughout a device, and programs designed for specific tasks.

Everyone needs software

Computer software is essential to anyone who uses a computer. Specialists require professional tools to do their work. On the other hand, people utilizing a desktop or laptop to casually play video games or watch movies need at least an operating system and programs that protect their safety and keep their PC in perfect condition.

As you can see, software is the driving force behind all digital devices. Without software, a computer would just be a cold and lifeless device that can do nothing without instructions. By providing instructions to the hardware, the software makes it possible for us to perform countless tasks on our computers.

Software vs. hardware

Software differs from hardware in its ability to be updated or replaced with new versions; because it exists as digital information, it can simply be deleted and rewritten with newer code as needed. This makes it much easier to improve existing programs or add new features than with hardware, where components must physically be replaced with better parts.

Most popular computer software

Different types of software are designed to perform different tasks on various systems and devices. For example, some software may be designed to process text documents, while other software might be designed to manage complex databases or create 3D graphics.

  • Operating systems. These are the most essential pieces of software since they manage computer resources and provide a user interface. There's no doubt that the best-known OS is MS Windows. Its first installment was released in 1985. Since then, Windows has received multiple new versions and have become arguably the most recognizable computer program. Other popular operating systems include Apple macOS, Linux, and Google Chrome OS.
  • Antivirus software. The purpose of antivirus software is to protect devices from dangerous viruses, malware, and anything else that can harm them. Popular antivirus software includes Norton Security, McAfee Total Protection, and Kaspersky Internet Security.
  • VPN. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a service that secures your connection to the internet. It encrypts all the data that goes through it and hides your IP address from any potential threats. Popular VPN services include KeepSolid VPN, NordVPN, and Atlas VPN.
  • Internet browsers. Internet browsers are also crucial pieces of computer software since they are how people access the internet. It allows users to surf the web, view websites, and search for information. Popular browsers include Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
  • System utilities. System utilities are software programs designed to help maintain and optimize computer performance by performing tasks such as troubleshooting problems and cleaning up unnecessary files. Common system utility programs include CCleaner, Glary Utilities, and Auslogics Disk Defrag.
  • Word processors. Word processors are applications used for creating and editing documents. MS Word, Google Docs, and OpenOffice are some of the most popular word processor programs available. Without them, it would be much harder to create professional-looking documents.
  • Raster graphics editor. Those are programs that enable users to edit images, such as photos and logos. Photoshop is the most well-known raster graphics editor, but other popular programs include GIMP and PaintShop Pro. All those programs are used by both professionals, who tweak images to the finest details, and amateurs who want to upgrade their holiday photos.
  • File archiver. This type of software is used to compress and archive files, making them easier to share and store. Popular file archivers include WinRAR, 7-Zip, and WinZIP.
