Divinity

Divinity is a turn-based role-playing game developed and published by Larian Studios and set in the fantasy world of Rivellon. Larian revealed it at The Game Awards in December 2025, making it the studio's first game to carry the bare title Divinity. It follows Divinity: Original Sin 2, which launched in 2017, as the next game in the long-running Divinity series.

About the game

Divinity

Set in the fantasy world of Rivellon, the new Divinity game from Larian Studios is a turn-based RPG that founder Swen Vincke has called the biggest game the studio has ever made. Vincke has said that actor performances and dialogue are already being recorded and that the recording will continue throughout development.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

  1. More agency than Baldur's Gate 3. Vincke has set the target for player agency “much higher” than in Baldur's Gate 3, on both the narrative and the systems side.
  2. Co-op. Multiplayer sits next to the single-player campaign, though Larian hasn't said how many players a session will hold.
  3. A dark fantasy with room for light. Writing director Adam Smith says the tone is dark without being relentlessly grim, leaving space for light and hope next to the ritual imagery of the reveal trailer.

Story and Lore

Larian's official tagline sets the mood in three short lines: “The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir.” Rivellon is the world of Divinity: Original Sin and Original Sin 2. Players of those games get extra continuity, and Larian says no earlier Divinity experience is required.

The reveal trailer, shown at The Game Awards 2025, stays on a single event: a festival ritual in which a figure is burned inside a wicker effigy. The Hellstone, the name Vincke uses for the statue Larian used to tease the reveal, is tied to that scene, and Larian has said it will explain the meaning of the statue's symbols over time. No gameplay appeared in the trailer.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Combat stays turn-based but runs on what Vincke describes as a new rule set, built on lessons from Larian's earlier games rather than carried over from Original Sin 2. The magic armor layer from Original Sin 2 is not returning.

  • Larian favors handcrafted magic items with their own properties over randomized loot drops.
  • WASD movement is not planned for launch.
  • Under the hood, the engine has been updated, motion capture is now automated, and designers have a new system for testing rules faster.

Characters and Factions

Larian has not yet revealed named companions or factions. According to writing director Adam Smith, companions and other characters should feel more naturally woven into the world, with friendship and romance handled more subtly. Character creation is a stated priority too: character art director Alena Dubrovina's team is aiming for more colors, options and control than Baldur's Gate 3 offered.
