About the game

1666: Amsterdam

In 1666: Amsterdam, you play a witch in a version of 17th-century Amsterdam where demons walk around wearing ordinary human faces. It is a single-player, third-person action-adventure built on investigation: questioning people and searching buildings to work out who is hiding what comes well before any fight.

Panache Digital Games develops and publishes the game for PC. The Early Access version, available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, carries a release date of 25 August 2026.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

Every locked door has more than one answer

Getting into a house, a meeting or a guarded building is treated as a puzzle with no single solution. Noa can force her way in or use witchcraft, and plain cunning works as well. Panache’s level designers planned several routes into each building. Creative director Patrice Désilets has said players are meant to decide how they want to play.

Choose which cat joins the hunt

Early in the story, the player picks one of nine cats: The Dreamer, The Hermit, The Spirit, The Knight, The Page, The Child, The Alchemist, The Guardian or The Wildling. Each has its own described personality traits, and the chosen cat becomes Aaron’s body for the rest of the story.

Ability picks that shape each hunt

Abilities on offer during hunts include a shield of vines, a swarm of crows and a durable tank form, so a fight can lean defensive or aggressive.

Story and Lore

The story is told across three periods tied to one mystery: Amsterdam at the turn of 1665 and 1666, December 1999, and the present day. It starts in December 1665 at Noa’s commencement, a ritual held around a sacred tree where she takes on the role of the Collector and a cat jumps into her arms as her familiar.

The link to 1999 is Aaron, a university professor who travels to Amsterdam with his lover to spend Christmas in a hotel. An occult ritual there sends his consciousness back in time, into the body of that same cat, and binds him to Noa.

  • Nux: the supernatural force the whole conflict revolves around.
  • Heeparan: the magic weapon through which Noa manipulates Nux.
  • Nuxefer: a manuscript that doubles as a journal of her work as Collector.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Days: legwork

Daytime belongs to investigation. Noa moves through the streets, questions locals and searches buildings until she knows where an Original is, what their true name is and which seal they used to sign their bargain. Dialogue choices affect relationships and the way the story progresses.

Staying in civilian form keeps attention away. A suspicion meter fills when Noa is recognized as a witch, and witch hunters respond to it. Her safehouse lets her recover and lower suspicion, and doubles as a place to craft potions.

Nights: the Esbat

An Esbat is a full-moon night, and it is when Original hunts take place: once identified, the target is forced to transform into its demonic self and is fought to the death. The hunts borrow from roguelites.

  • Coffers placed around the city by Noa’s coven each offer a choice of three abilities, which appear as jewelry on her witch form.
  • Dying resets the night and loses the coffers collected; finishing the hunt keeps the abilities.

Magic and combat

Noa fights with her broomstick, dodging and striking, and adds spells such as petrification and levitation. Nearby objects can be used as weapons, and intimidation can make enemies flee. Two magical resources feed her abilities:

  • Lux is drawn from dead things and other sources, and powers environmental abilities.
  • Nux is rarer and is spent in combat.
  • Aaron can convert between the two, and successful quick-time events restore Nux.

Getting around

Noa can warp onto rooftops and glide across the city. Switching to Aaron gives access to routes she cannot use: he fits into small spaces, climbs, and unlocks doors or hatches from the inside, while Noa handles conversations and can open windows for him.

Characters and Factions

  • Noa Brooklyn. An apprentice apothecary by trade who keeps her head down in public. Heir to the knowledge of the Zaindaris, she was raised for the Collector’s role rather than choosing it.
  • Aaron. A professor in 1999 and a cat in 1666, with his own memories intact. According to the developer, he is working out why he was pulled through time and kept in feline form.
  • Clio. Aaron’s daughter, living in the present day. She investigates a letter from her ailing father whose central passage is hidden by magic, and an old professor friend of his, Professor Lucas, helps her read it.
  • The Zaindaris. A clandestine coven of witches that passes ancient knowledge down the generations and raised Noa for her task.
  • The Originals. Beings who have lived for centuries and hold extended life and power gained through a contract. Corrupted by Nux, they are trying to complete a ritual that would let them take it over for all time.
  • Witch hunters. The human threat. A group of them interrupts a coven gathering early in the preview, which turns into a chase and a fight across the streets.

Editions

There is only Standard Edition, which contains the base game. You can also buy digital soundtrack separately.

Panache Digital Games has said the Early Access price is meant to rise gradually as the game nears completion.
