No More Room in Hell 2

No More Room in Hell 2 is a cooperative survival horror shooter from Torn Banner Studios. Up to eight players take on the role of emergency Responders trying to survive a zombie outbreak, scavenging scarce supplies and fighting their way to extraction. Every encounter with the infected risks the virus spreading to you too, and a Responder who succumbs is gone for good

About the game

Players drop into No More Room in Hell 2 as emergency Responders, deployed into zombie-infested locations to scavenge supplies, finish objectives, and reach an extraction vehicle before infection or the horde catches up. Torn Banner Studios built it as a cooperative horror shooter for up to eight players, with permadeath and shared resources doing most of the tension work.

The game left Early Access on August 11, 2026, nearly two years after its October 22, 2024 PC debut. That 1.0 update, called Armageddon, put the series on consoles for the first time. It also added cross-play between Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and rebuilt the economy and progression systems.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

Every Responder Can Die for Good

Every hit from a shambling corpse below roughly 50% health carries a chance of infection. Once the timer starts, a Responder has about five minutes before turning and attacking their own squad. Phalanx Pills buy time by resetting that clock, but they don't cure anything. Only the rare Experimental Gene Therapy device does that: inject once, wait about thirty seconds while it processes a blood sample, then inject again to clear the virus and gain immunity for the rest of the match. Miss both, and the only clean way out is the self-sacrifice key, ending the character before it can turn on the team. Losing a leveled-up Responder for good is permanent unless a Rescue Beacon is equipped beforehand.

Crossplay Covers Every Platform

Since Armageddon, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S players share one matchmaking pool. A party of eight can mix every supported platform without anyone buying the game twice. Xbox owners also get Xbox Play Anywhere, carrying progress between console and Windows PC within Microsoft's ecosystem. That progression doesn't extend to Steam or PlayStation, though.

Scenario and Survival Play Very Differently

Scenario mode sends a squad through one of six objective-driven locations that end with a scramble toward vehicle extraction. The newer, permanent Survival mode strips that down to three wave-based maps: Flooded, Lighthouse, and Night of the Living Dead. The goal there is defending speaker towers long enough for civilians to evacuate. Players who'd rather learn a map first can use Solo mode instead, which drops permadeath and account progression entirely.

Setting & Story

The title comes from a line in George Romero's Dawn of the Dead: “When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.” The world itself started as a free Half-Life 2 mod that Lever Games released in 2011. Torn Banner Studios built this sequel with that original team, keeping the same grounded outbreak setting but introducing a new cause: a virus called Kulon that leaves its victims comatose before they reanimate.

There's no scripted campaign here. The story comes through mission briefings, item descriptions, and the environment itself. Players are civilians turned emergency Responders right at the start of the outbreak, with no larger arc between missions, just the next call for extraction. Raven Rock, one of the locations added at the 1.0 launch, fits that same pattern: a new setting, not a new chapter.

Gameplay & Mechanics

Reviewers have compared the pacing to a mix of Left 4 Dead's tight cooperative rhythm and State of Decay's slower dread. That tracks with how sparse the resources are. Ammunition, medical supplies, and melee weapons all get shared across up to eight Responders, and proximity voice chat carries most of the coordination once a map splits the group up.

How infection works:

  • Getting hit while under roughly 50% health carries a chance of infection, and the risk climbs the lower that health drops.
  • Phalanx Pills, found in three-dose bottles, reset the infection timer without curing it.
  • Experimental Gene Therapy is the only field cure. Inject once, wait about thirty seconds while the device processes a blood sample, then inject again to clear the virus and gain immunity for the rest of the match.
  • Extracting from a mission cures any active infection automatically. A self-sacrifice option is available for players who'd rather not risk turning on their team.

The 1.0 economy runs on two currencies. Credits come from collected supplies and completed objectives, and get spent on starting loadouts, skills, and cosmetics. Merits only come from weekly Assignments and go toward cosmetics and the Rescue Beacon, a consumable that can save a Responder's experience and skills, though not their gear, the one time it's used.

Four difficulty tiers scale the threat across both Scenario and Survival modes: Beginner, Normal, Hard, and Nightmare. Solo mode sits outside that ladder entirely, a permadeath-free space for learning maps and testing loadouts.
