About the game

Death Stranding Director’s Cut

Sam Porter Bridges works as a courier in a collapsed United States, and the job is to carry other people’s cargo across it on foot. Directed by Hideo Kojima and developed by Kojima Productions, this single-player action-adventure treats a delivery as a small expedition: parcels are packed and balanced by hand, routes are planned around terrain that punishes carelessness, and every settlement reached widens the network that ties the country together. The Director’s Cut keeps the full campaign of the 2019 original and builds optional content around it.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

Every delivery is a route-planning problem

Rivers too deep to wade and Timefall that ruins cargo turn each order into a logistics puzzle. Deciding where to cross, where to climb and when to wait out the rain is the real content of the game, and a run that goes exactly as planned is its own reward.

Music and performances that fill the long walks

Low Roar’s contemplative, folk-leaning tracks tend to start playing as a destination comes into view, which keeps the quiet stretches from feeling empty. The trophy case backs it up:

  • Best Game Direction, Best Score/Music and Best Performance (Mads Mikkelsen) for the original at The Game Awards 2019
  • Best Game on the Go for the Director’s Cut at the 2022 Steam Awards

Other players quietly shape your route

Structures left by other players show up in your game, and each one can be thanked with a like. Finding a rope already anchored on a steep face, or a generator waiting beside a road, can change which way you go.

Story and Lore

A cataclysm called the Death Stranding tore open the boundary between the living and the dead. What crossed over were Beached Things, or BTs: invisible entities tied to the afterlife realm known as the Beach. Their presence brings Timefall, a rain that speeds up the decay of whatever it touches, and a person swallowed by a BT triggers a voidout, a blast on the scale of a nuclear detonation that leaves a crater where a settlement stood. Survivors withdrew into isolated Knot Cities, the remnants of the United Cities of America, and depend on a company called Bridges to move supplies between them.

  • The Chiral Network: an instant data and communication system running through the Beach. A settlement that joins it gains access to shared information and printable equipment.
  • Bridge Babies (BBs): premature infants suspended between life and death, kept in pods that help porters sense BTs. Official policy says to treat them as equipment.

The plot starts when President Bridget Strand, Sam’s adoptive mother, asks him to rejoin Bridges and help reform the country. His route runs from the east coast across the continent to Edge Knot City, the last stop on the west coast, where his estranged sister Amelie is held by a terrorist group. Kojima has described the core theme as the value of forging connections with other people. Letters and interviews collected along the way fill in background that the cutscenes leave unexplained.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Every order comes down to getting cargo from A to B in one piece. Weight and packing determine how Sam moves, and on rough ground or under a heavy load the triggers keep his balance. Falls and enemy hits damage what he carries, and so does careless handling. Each delivery is scored across several categories with social-media-style likes, which work like experience points: carrying capacity and balance grow with them, while a separate connection rating with each city, outpost or person unlocks better gear.

  • Blueprints let a terminal on the Chiral Network print ladders, ropes, boots and repair spray.
  • A portable constructor builds structures such as bridges and watchtowers in open areas covered by the network, plus generators that recharge the batteries in exoskeletons and vehicles.
  • Bikes, reverse trikes and trucks shorten long hauls, at the price of battery management and rough terrain.
  • Cargo lost by other players can be recovered and delivered for them, and doing so earns likes.

BTs stay invisible until Sam’s Odradek scanner picks them up. Early on, the best answer is to hold your breath and let them drift past, while later weapons make fights against their true forms possible. Those fights are mechanically simple and staged as set-pieces. MULEs give way to non-lethal methods, and the first gun that works on living enemies does not kill; the game steers players away from killing at all, since death ends in craters and more BTs. Should Sam himself die, he can swim back through the Seam to his body. Kojima describes the whole thing as the first “strand game,” a genre label built around the social layer.

Characters and Factions

Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus) begins as a reserved freelance porter and gradually opens up to the people he meets along the way.

Bridges’ inner circle is led by Die-Hardman (Tommie Earl Jenkins), the company’s Director and Bridget’s personal aide. Around him are Deadman, a Bridges doctor built on Guillermo del Toro’s likeness and voiced by Jesse Corti; the twin sisters Mama and Lockne, both played by Margaret Qualley; and Heartman, modeled on Nicolas Winding Refn and voiced by Darren Jacobs. Mama, Lockne and Heartman work on researching the Death Stranding itself.

  • Fragile (Léa Seydoux) runs Fragile Express, an independent delivery company, and can carry herself and anyone she touches across long distances. She is the one who helps Sam slip past a BT in the opening.
  • Higgs Monaghan (Troy Baker), a masked terrorist leader who wants to wipe out what remains of humanity.
  • Clifford Unger (Mads Mikkelsen) appears in memories Sam experiences through his BB, and in short sequences set inside a Beach of their own.
  • Amelie (likeness of Lindsay Wagner) is the sister who led the three-year expedition that set up the network’s first terminals across the country.

Factions

Bridges is the porter company that supplies the Knot Cities and carries out various government functions on behalf of the UCA.

Homo Demens is the terrorist group that captured Amelie in order to guarantee the independence of Edge Knot City.

MULEs are former porters who became obsessed with cargo and now steal it, having lost their purpose as automation replaced jobs.

Editions

Two PC versions carry the name, and they are separate products rather than one patched into the other. The original release is titled plain DEATH STRANDING; its Steam page now states that it is no longer available in the store, though copies bought earlier stay in their owners’ libraries. The Director’s Cut, published for PC by 505 Games like the original, is the version Steam currently sells. It contains the full original game, plus:

  • Extra story missions and a new eastern area, the Ruined Factory, along with around 40 added standard orders and a new toxic cargo type
  • A Firing Range with 28 ranked drills for weapon practice
  • The Fragile Circuit racetrack for the reverse trike, truck and new roadster, with ranked time-attack runs
  • The Maser gun, which stuns enemies, three new melee moves, and mounted machine guns that appear in MULE camps and can be turned on them
  • A support skeleton that raises movement speed and carrying capacity, and a Buddy Bot that hauls cargo and gathers materials
  • Cargo Catapult, Jump Ramp and Chiral Bridge structures
  • Boss battles that can be replayed, with rankings
  • New tracks from Woodkid, Biting Elbows, Midge Ure and Apocalyptica, plus Intel XeSS upscaling support
  • Crossover items from Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077

Every copy also includes a digital art book by Titan Books and gold and silver cosmetics such as the Bridges Special Delivery Team Suits, Power Gloves and BB pod customization, unlocked through story progress. High frame rate, photo mode and ultra-wide monitor support are listed for the PC version.
