Destiny 2: Renegades
Destiny 2: Renegades puts your Guardian on the wrong side of the law. Made in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, this Star Wars-inspired expansion swaps Vanguard orders for cantina deals, bounty contracts and turf wars between criminal syndicates on Mars, Venus and Europa.
It is the tenth and final expansion for Destiny 2, built around a story campaign and a repeatable activity full of contract work.
Top 3 Reasons to Play
- Star Wars hardware with Destiny handling. Several new weapons riff on guns carried by Han Solo, Boba Fett, Cassian Andor and Din Djarin, and the Heirloom Exotic crossbow is a nod to Chewbacca's bowcaster.
- A blade of your own. The Praxic Blade is a kinetic Exotic sword built as Destiny's answer to the lightsaber, and earnable crystals recolour it.
- A three-way turf war where your loyalty matters. Pledging to the Pikers, the Tharsis Reformation or the Totality Division decides which priority contract appears each day and which faction-exclusive rewards you can unlock.
Story and Lore
The Edge of Fate ended with a prophecy from the Nine, and the Vanguard decided to keep it classified rather than alarm a Last City still recovering from the war with the Witness. The Drifter has no patience for that. While patrolling the system alone, he finds that a Cabal force called the Barant Imperium has built a base on Mars seemingly overnight, and he suspects the Nine had a hand in it.
Without official backing, he recruits your Guardian, Eris Morn, Eido and the Praxic Order Warlock Aunor Mahal for a job: steal a data disc from the Imperium. The heist goes sideways when Dredgen Bael, a figure from the Drifter's past, catches up with them. The data they escape with leads to the Nightfall Station, an orbital superweapon whose concept draws on both the Death Star and Starkiller Base.
Locations that anchor the story:
- Tharsis Outpost, Mars: a trading post outside Vanguard reach, where Spider keeps an uneasy truce between the syndicates. Its cantina borrows from Mos Eisley.
- Venus: back as a mission location, the first Destiny 2 content set on the planet apart from the Vault of Glass raid.
- Europa: a frozen front whose battlefields recall Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back.
Gameplay and Mechanics
After the credits, most of your time goes into the Lawless Frontier. You pick a job on the holomap, drop in from a Hawk, clear objectives against a timer and then fire a flare to call for extraction. Bungie flags that some rewards collected mid-job are only yours if you make it out.
Job types
- Bounty Hunt: find and take out a wanted outlaw.
- Smuggling: haul contraband between syndicate facilities and off the map.
- Sabotage: hit rival operations by blowing up generators or directing airstrikes.
Each planet in the Frontier has two territories, and only one territory across all six is contested on a given day. That one offers three jobs, and clearing them improves the odds that your syndicate takes full control the next day. Any territory a faction already holds outright is locked, while the other four carry a single job each with no bonuses.
Renegade Abilities
Before every job you equip two Renegade Abilities from a pool of nine. They function only in the Frontier and the campaign, and their charges refill from supply caches on the map. Revitalize summons a healing drone for allies, Strafing Run brings air support, and the Totality Division can lend you the Imperium Behemoth, a Cabal walker.
Currencies
- Credits: paid out when you finish a job, with the amount depending on the caches you grabbed, and also found in chests and lockboxes. You spend them in the Tharsis Bazaar on weapons, armor, Renegade Ability upgrades and Praxic Blade parts.
- Dark Matter Ingots: donated to any of the three syndicates to raise your standing with them.
- Deathmarks: the stake for Invasion. A bigger wager multiplies the reward, though losing an invasion then costs more.
Invasion itself is opt-in. An invader appears inside another fireteam's job and tries to slow it down or make it fail, and the attempt ends after three invader deaths or when time expires. Payouts scale with how well the invader performs.
Blasters and the Praxic Blade
Heat weapons are a brand-new archetype in Renegades. Blasters fire directly from reserve ammo and have no magazine at all. The reload input vents heat instead, and a gun that hits 100% heat locks up until it cools completely. Dynamic models deal more damage and build heat faster, whereas Balanced ones trade damage for very low heat generation.
Your Praxic Blade grows with the Frontier loop. Ranking up with a syndicate unlocks its blade mods, and Credits buy further sword components.
Dungeon and progression
Equilibrium, a three-player dungeon on Venus, opened on December 13, 2025, with a contest mode enabled for its first 48 hours. On the progression side, Bungie scrapped a planned Seasonal Power reset before launch and made it possible to reach the Power cap through Renegades activities alone.
Characters and Factions
The cast mixes familiar Destiny faces with newcomers, and the Drifter is at the centre of it. He pulls the crew together without Vanguard approval. Years ago he rode with the Shadows of Yor, the group Bael belongs to.
Allies
- Aunor Mahal: a Praxic Order Warlock who wields her own Praxic Blade. Players last heard of her during Season of the Drifter.
- Eris Morn and Eido: longtime allies of the Guardian who sign on to the Drifter's plan.
- Spider: the Eliksni fixer of Tharsis, who supplies your first Renegade Abilities and opens doors with the syndicates.
Antagonists
- Dredgen Bael: leader of the Barant Imperium and the main villain, with Kylo Ren among the influences on his design.
- Premier Lume: the Imperium officer in command of the Nightfall.
- Barant Imperium: a Cabal army patterned on the Galactic Empire and its stormtroopers.
The syndicates
Three outlaw factions compete for the Frontier, each with a quartermaster in the Tharsis Bazaar:
- Pikers: Eliksni bikers who reject both gods and hierarchy. Mechanic Deoriks handles their trade.
- Tharsis Reformation: Vex who split from the collective and now pursue a sense of self, represented by Reformancer Guzheng.
- Totality Division: Cabal deserters from the Barant Imperium, run by psions, with Armorer Aghol as quartermaster.
Loyalty isn't permanent. You can switch syndicates freely on any day you haven't yet completed your current faction's priority contract.
