Palworld

Palworld is a third-person open-world survival crafting game set on the Palpagos Islands. Players capture creatures called Pals, breed them and station them at bases to craft, farm and mine. Combat combines firearms, melee weapons and Pal skills against rival factions and tower bosses, in solo or multiplayer play. Version 1.0 adds a structured story, two new regions and endgame upgrades for Pals.

About the game

Palworld overview

You start on a Palpagos shoreline with a damaged tablet, an empty stomach and a world full of creatures that can be captured, ridden or assigned a job.

Palworld is a third-person survival crafting game that joins base building and factory automation to creature collecting and shooter-style combat. Wild Pals roam deserts, snowfields, volcanic slopes and the skies above the islands, and every one you catch can fight beside you, haul cargo or tend crops. Solo and online play are both built in.

Top 3 Reasons to Play Palworld

Pals with real jobs

Each Pal carries a Partner Skill, and each species has its own work suitabilities. A Pal with Kindling suitability lights the furnaces, a Planting specialist seeds a field, and a Lumbering one keeps the sawmill supplied. The roster ends up working as a staff as well as a battle team, which changes how you judge a new catch: its attack stats are half of the picture, and its usefulness at the base is the other half.

Crossing the map is half the fun

Mounts cover land, sea and sky, and flying Pals shrink the distance between biomes. The 1.0 update widened the options:

  • A Wing Pack glider that gets you airborne without borrowing a Pal
  • Sunreach, a chain of floating islands that you have to fly to

A campaign with a destination

The 1.0 patch rebuilt the main missions so that exploring Palpagos, beating the tower bosses, flying to Sunreach and opening the World Tree lead into each other. Existing worlds carry over, though Pocketpair advises starting a fresh character to get the reworked early game.

Palworld Story and Lore

The campaign begins on a beach. The player character washes ashore with a damaged tablet that names two destinations: the faction towers and a colossal tree. A nearby mercenary repairs the device, and its first lead points to the Rayne Syndicate's tower. There, Zoe Rayne attacks the newcomer, loses, and drops a Key Sphere. All tower leaders carry one, and collecting them is the way to the tree.

An older tragedy sits behind the feuding. The islands once held an ancient civilization that was wiped out in a single night by a force known as the Calamity, which now lies sealed inside the World Tree. Auri, leader of the Azure Covenant, lays this out and sends the player after Panthalus, a legendary whale-like Pal whose help is needed to get inside.

Sunreach, added in the 1.0 update, extends the setting upward: a chain of islands hanging above Palpagos, held aloft by Paldium. A civilization of its own took root there over a long span, and the towers above the clouds are where its history comes out.

  • Collectible journals add faction-leader perspectives. Zoe Rayne's entries describe the Syndicate's relationship with the Free Pal Alliance as a tangled one and have her question why she guards a tower at all.
  • Settlements added in 1.0 come with their own NPCs and sub-missions.

Palworld Gameplay and Mechanics

Survival and base building

Food is scarce and poachers roam, so the opening hours revolve around crafting basic tools and gathering materials. A technology tree then unlocks weapons, structures and decorations, and each base you found doubles as a fast-travel point. Pals can be cooked as well, an option the Steam listing states openly. According to Pocketpair's CEO, the creature-companion idea was modelled on ARK: Survival Evolved, with the survival layer taking cues from Rust.

Automation at the base

  • Fields run on specialists: one Pal plants, another waters, another harvests.
  • Ore and electricity come from Pals with the matching skills.
  • Large builds go faster when a whole crew handles construction.
  • A Pal Expedition Station sends Pals out to bring back materials while you play elsewhere.

Capturing and breeding

Wild Pals have to be worn down in combat before a Pal Sphere will hold them, and rarer or higher-level ones call for better spheres. Breeding needs a Breeding Farm, one male and one female parent, Cake and an Egg Incubator. Hidden values assigned to each species decide what hatches, which is why a given pair always produces the same species.

  • Mutation, new in 1.0, gives an egg a low chance of hatching with boosted stats and a passive skill that ordinary breeding cannot produce.
  • Cakes tilt the odds: a Vegetable Cake, for example, makes the parents lay two eggs at once.
  • Duplicate Pals can be condensed to raise one Pal's rank, and the number needed for the top rank dropped from 116 to 48.
  • Awakening spends Radiant Gems from the World Tree to strengthen a Pal permanently.

Combat and elements

Fights play out in third person with guns, melee weapons and summoned Pals. Nine elements drive damage: Neutral, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ground, Ice, Dragon and Dark. Fire is the only element with two targets, Grass and Ice, and Water counters it. Neutral has no advantage over anything and a single weakness, Dark. Pals with two elements take on the strengths and weaknesses of both.

The 1.0 patch lifted the level cap from 65 to 80, introduced 13 weapons, swapped base defence for wave-based raids and overhauled the tower boss encounters.

Palworld Characters and Factions

The islands are split between groups with opposed ideals, all of them fighting over the towers.

  • Rayne Syndicate: led by Zoe Rayne, a criminal outfit built on poaching Pals for profit. Its ground covers the low-level regions, the Bamboo Groves, the Desiccated Dunes and the Oil Rigs.
  • Free Pal Alliance (Lily Everhart) stands against Pal exploitation and operates around Crescent Moon Shore and Verdant Brook.
  • Axel Travers, a Soul Reader, heads the Brothers of the Eternal Pyre, a fire-worshipping order that treats flame as purification and views genetic tinkering as an abomination. Its base is Mount Obsidian.
  • The Palpagos Islands Defense Force, under Marcus Dryden, polices the settlements and is portrayed as corrupt. Commit a crime against humans and its troopers spawn in groups until you kill them or slip away; they can out-level you.
  • Victor Ashford commands the PAL Genetic Research Unit in the Astral Mountains. His work produced Shadowbeak, an artificial Pal.
  • Moonflower Clan, a stealth-focused ninja order under Saya Kurosaki, lives on Sakurajima.
  • Feybreak Warriors occupy Feybreak Island, which arrived in the December 2024 update.
  • Azure Covenant, led by Auri, is the last tower faction before the World Tree and the one that explains what the tree holds.

Faction members also turn up away from their towers, patrolling the wilds and sometimes fighting one another. Defeated humans can even be caught with a Pal Sphere, though they lose the ability to use weapons.

Palworld Editions

Palworld is sold as a single standard release. The Sakurajima and Feybreak islands and the Terraria-themed update live inside the base game, and the only add-on listed on Steam is the soundtrack by Tatsuya Yano, a composer known for the Atelier series, which is sold separately.
