Grand Theft Auto VI
Two career criminals building a life together across the sun-bleached sprawl of Leonida anchor Rockstar Games' next mainline entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos share top billing as playable leads, driving a single-player campaign built around their partnership. Development has run for well over a decade, and after two publicly announced delays, the launch is now set for November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Top 3 Reasons to Play
A few things separate this entry from anything Rockstar has shipped before.
- Switch leads mid-job. The Extended Look showed Jason and Lucia trading control in real time during a police chase, one driving while the other leans out to return fire, a level of two-protagonist coordination that goes beyond GTA V's turn-based switching between three leads.
- A world that notices you. The same footage had NPCs reacting to specific player choices: pedestrians dressed for yoga or riding scooters, traffic swerving around people on foot, and a moment where Jason can choose to pet or scold a dog in a hallway.
- Leonida goes well past the city limits. Rockstar has named six distinct regions beyond Vice City itself, among them the wetlands of Grassrivers, the island chain of the Leonida Keys, and the wilderness of Mount Kalaga National Park, each built around its own terrain and activities.
Story and Setting
Leonida is Rockstar's fictional stand-in for Florida, with Vice City filling the role Miami plays in the state's real identity, and it sits at the center of Jason and Lucia's story as the pair get pulled deeper into the local criminal underworld. Rockstar frames the couple's dynamic on the classic Bonnie and Clyde template: partners in crime whose relationship, not a rags-to-riches arc, drives the plot. The current Vice City belongs to Rockstar's ongoing HD Universe rather than a rebuild of the 2002 original, though its neon-lit art deco streets keep the same tropical, crime-soaked mood.
Characters and Factions
Jason Duval spent time in the Leonida Keys working for local drug runners before the story picks up, a background Rockstar's own character material ties directly to his introduction. Lucia Caminos is the series' first female protagonist to headline a mainline entry, and much of the Extended Look's narrative footage was built around her perspective. Supporting characters shown so far include Brian and Lorie, a retired couple who moonlight as drug runners in the Keys, and Raul Batista, a professional bank robber who brings Jason and Lucia in as getaway drivers for one of the game's heists.
Gameplay and Mechanics
The series' six-star Wanted system returns, paired with police behavior Rockstar says reacts to how a chase actually unfolds rather than escalating on a fixed timer. Robbery and car-theft sequences carry more physical detail than earlier entries, including a quick-time prompt for cracking a car window during a theft. Away from missions, footage showed both leads eating, working out, and changing appearance based on those habits over time, alongside a long list of side activities scattered across the state: scuba diving, fishing, hunting, basketball, jet skiing, kayaking, and base jumping among them.
Editions
Two versions are available at launch. The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99 and covers the complete single-player campaign and the full Leonida map, with every core gameplay system included; there's no stripped-down starting point. The Ultimate Edition runs $99.99 and builds on that with an extended set of vehicles, weapons, apparel, and additional unlockable locations, such as a dedicated tattoo parlor, that open up gradually as Jason and Lucia progress. Standard Edition owners aren't shut out of Ultimate content permanently either, since Rockstar has said the Ultimate Edition Upgrade will stay purchasable separately at any point after launch.
