About the game

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster

Willamette, Colorado, is under military quarantine, and freelance photojournalist Frank West has been set down on the roof of its shopping mall with no way out until his helicopter returns. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is Capcom's update of the 2006 game that started the Dead Rising series, set inside that mall. Frank can chase the cause of the outbreak or spend his hours escorting survivors and photographing the chaos, and the zombies share the building with human psychopaths.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

  1. No single run covers everything. Case Files begin at fixed times and survivors need reaching before they are overrun, and the hours never stretch far enough to do both for everyone. What gets left behind shapes each playthrough.
  2. The horror leans toward slapstick, a deliberate step away from Capcom's own Resident Evil series. Almost any object in the mall can be picked up as a weapon, and Frank can change outfits whenever he likes.
  3. RE Engine drives the new character models, lighting and blood effects. Autosave now sits alongside manual saving, and survivor AI has been reworked after the escort frustrations of the original.

Story and Lore

Frank's pilot drops him at the Willamette Parkview Mall with instructions to come back in three days. Inside, he learns that a zombie outbreak is the reason for the quarantine, and the mall is already swarming with the dead. Frank takes shelter in the security room and gets help from a janitor over the transceiver, and soon after from a DHS agent.

The trail leads to Santa Cabeza, a Central American town where experiments with native wasps on cattle produced a zombifying effect. The U.S. military quarantined the town and massacred its population to keep the story buried. Isabela Keyes, a former research assistant on the project, explains the connection once Frank frees her. Her brother Carlito is trying to carry the parasite far beyond Willamette by bombing the mall's parking garage.

Brock Mason, the Special Forces commander who also led the Santa Cabeza operation, waits between Frank and the way out.

Gameplay and Mechanics

The main story runs through Case Files, missions that start at set times of day. Failing one does not end the run: Frank can keep exploring until time runs out. Nights are the harsher half of each day, with faster, stronger and more numerous zombies.

The campaign itself is the 72 Hour Mode. Clearing every Case File in time unlocks Overtime Mode, which adds one more in-game day of objectives, and finishing that opens Infinity Mode, a clockless variant where Frank has to keep eating as his health drains and the survivors turn hostile.

Prestige Points (PP) come from kills, photographs, Case Files, rescues and defeated psychopaths. Each level adds attack power, running speed, throwing distance, health and inventory space, and unlocks new combat moves. Levels and unlocks persist into new playthroughs.

The camera feeds the same point pool, with shots scored by genre such as horror, drama and brutality. This version adds camera upgrades and parts, auto-focus and tilt, and filters in photo mode.

Combat and handling were adjusted in several places.

  • A Standard control scheme makes escaping grabs and the Flying Dodge easier, and buttons can be remapped. The Classic option restores the 2006 layout.
  • Inventory items show a durability bar before they break. Books return and can enhance items, and firearm headshots are lethal against lower-level zombies.
  • Time can be fast-forwarded, survivor dialogue can be sped up, and the transceiver calls that guide Frank no longer get cut off when he is attacked.

Characters and Factions

Frank West is the only playable character. The remaster recasts him: Jas Patrick takes over from Terence J. Rotolo, the original voice of Frank.

Otis Washington, the janitor who coaches Frank by transceiver, and DHS agent Brad Garrison are the first people Frank leans on. Beyond them, dozens of survivors are scattered around the mall and can be escorted back to the security room, where they count as saved.

Psychopaths are the game's boss encounters: humans either broken by the outbreak or exploiting it. A few of them:

  • Adam MacIntyre, a clown in Wonderland Plaza
  • Cletus Samson, found at the Huntin' Shack in North Plaza
  • Jo Slade, who holds hostages at the Lovely Fashion House
  • Sean Keanan, leader of a raincoat cult at Colby's Movieland
  • Larry Chiang, a butcher working the Meat Processing Area

Special Forces troops under Brock Mason form the other organized human force in Willamette.

Editions

The game is sold in two digital editions, with cosmetic packs available on top.

  • Standard Edition: the base game on its own.
  • Digital Deluxe Edition: the base game plus five Costumes & BGM packs (Willamette Parkview Mall, Resident Evil Heroes, Resident Evil Villains, Mega Man and Capcom Fighters). Together they hold 17 costume-and-music pairs; named outfits include Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Licker, Nemesis, Mega Man and Rikuo.
  • Dead Rising Original Pack: three more costumes with matching mall tracks: Frank's 2006 look, Chuck Greene from Dead Rising 2 and the Willamette Parkview Mall Bee. It is not part of Digital Deluxe and is sold as a separate add-on.

Every pack is cosmetic. Each pairs a costume with a replacement mall soundtrack, selectable under Change Mall BGM in the Options menu, and the packs can also be bought individually.
