About the game

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake

BioWare's 2003 Star Wars role-playing game is being rebuilt from the ground up with modern technology, and the original story and characters are staying as they were. The player assembles a party and travels between planets while Darth Malak's Sith fleet wages war on the Republic. No release date has been announced.

Top 3 Reasons to Play

  1. A story that reacts to the player. The announcement described the original as “cinematic storytelling that responds to the choices you make”, and the remake is meant to preserve it.
  2. Eight major locations, from Taris to the Star Forge, and an order of Star Map worlds that can vary between playthroughs.
  3. Members of the original Knights of the Old Republic team are part of the remake's development team.

Story and Lore

The setting is the era of the ancient Galactic Republic, about 3,956 years before A New Hope. Malak's Sith armada has overrun the galaxy, and Bastila Shan, a Jedi whose battle meditation is vital to the Republic, is the key figure the player's character is sent to find. The hero, who has no memory of their past, trains as a Jedi and follows Star Maps toward the Star Forge.

The quest passes through Taris, Dantooine, Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, Korriban, Lehon with its Temple of the Ancients, and the Star Forge itself. A brief look at Darth Revan, a figure from the setting's past, appeared in the 2021 teaser. At the announcement, Aspyr said the original story and characters remain intact.

Gameplay and Mechanics

Remake systems have not been shown. The one description on record comes from the announcement: a rebuild with the latest technology, features and visuals. The 2003 game gives the reference point.

  • Rules come from the d20 System in Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game.
  • Combat is turn-based, in rounds of roughly six seconds of real time; the player can set it to pause at certain events or at the end of every round.
  • Alignment shifts with dialogue and major plot decisions. It affects appearance, the cost of some Force powers and the ending.

Characters and Factions

The protagonist can be male or female in the original, and the story branches with that choice. Nine companions can join: Bastila Shan, Carth Onasi, Canderous Ordo, Mission Vao, Zaalbar, Jolee Bindo, Juhani, HK-47 and T3-M4. Canderous is a Mandalorian, Zaalbar a Wookiee and HK-47 a droid.

Darth Malak commands the Sith fleet. Around the three major powers (the Republic, the Sith and the Jedi Order) stand the Czerka Corporation, the Mandalorians, the Black Vulkar and Hidden Bek swoop gangs, Wookiee clans and the Selkath of Manaan.
