Grounded 2 overview
Four teenagers get shrunk to the size of ants in the middle of a public park, and very little in it is friendly. Grounded 2 is an open-world survival game built around foraging, crafting, base building and fights with oversized bugs, playable solo or in online co-op. It entered Early Access on July 29, 2025, and Obsidian Entertainment has kept widening the park and the feature list ever since.
The first Grounded confined its survivors to one suburban backyard. Brookhollow Park gives the sequel a larger map of anthills, garden beds, a pond and abandoned research sites to work through.
Top 3 Reasons to Play
1. Insect mounts with real jobs
The first Buggy on offer, the Red Soldier Ant, carries loads that would otherwise slow a player down and cuts grass faster than a character on foot. The Orb Weaver is the combat-minded alternative, quicker across the ground and able to fire webs that hold enemies in place. Both fight back when attacked and can be revived if they go down.
2. Co-op capped at four
Online sessions hold up to four players, a limit Obsidian set on purpose because a bigger group would have undermined what the series is about. Two details show how the game supports a team:
- The Reliable Friend mutation speeds up reviving downed allies.
- In co-op, every Red Soldier Ant Buggy can recruit one red worker ant to fight beside its rider.
3. Four content updates and counting
Early Access has already produced four major updates:
- Hairy and Scary (September 2025) introduced the tarantula boss AXL.
- Toxic Tangle (January 2026) opened the Garden and brought the Ladybug Buggy.
- Beat the Heat (April 2026) delivered the Sinkhole Anthill, the lizard boss King Dozer and a Black Soldier Ant Buggy.
- Into the Abyss (August 2026) took players below the pond’s surface, with diving suits and fully underwater bases.
Story and Lore
The story is set in 1992, two years after the first game’s shrinking incident. Max, Pete, Willow and Hoops have become minor local celebrities, the shrinking technology is public knowledge, and the corporation Ominent is trying to repair its image with a statue honoring Dr. Wendell Tully and his robot assistant BURG.L. The unveiling ceremony at Brookhollow Park goes wrong almost at once: Tully cuts his own speech short and rips BURG.L’s head off, an explosion follows, and the teens end up miniaturized again.
Why Tully did it is the central question of the opening act, and the answers sit in Ominent’s own facilities. Research sites are scattered across the park, including a hidden onboarding facility and Ranger outposts the company left behind. Smaller finds fill in the surroundings: a news crew’s abandoned camera, a pamphlet for the unveiling, and a memorial crate buried by an environmental group called the Green Army.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Survival comes down to managing hunger, thirst and stamina while collecting whatever the park offers, from grass planks and sap to parts looted from defeated bugs. Fights drain stamina too, and enemies become more aggressive once night falls. The camera can be played in first or third person.
- Omni-Tool. One tool with no durability covers chopping, hammering, digging and repair work. Each function levels up in tiers, and the higher tiers are what unlock tougher materials such as Snake Scale.
- Raw Science. Earned from glowing nodes in the park, story objectives and Ranger Challenges, then spent at Ranger Stations on recipes and tool tiers. Nothing in this loop can be bought: Obsidian’s FAQ lists no in-game purchases or virtual currencies.
- Archetypes. Fighter, Rogue, Ranger and Mage appear as passive perks on armor and boost matching weapon types. Rangers, for instance, favor bows and spears because both hit weak points well. Sets can be mixed freely.
- Mutations. Unlocked by finishing a challenge, such as killing a set number of venomous creatures, and used to fine-tune a build.
Bases can start as a modest shelter and grow into a walled compound. Separately, the Playgrounds mode, live since March 2026, offers two maps: the Grassbox, carried over from the first game, and Brookhollow Park itself. Creators wire modular, logic-driven objects together to build scripted events, escalating enemy waves or puzzle rooms, and the Handy Gnat helps place pieces precisely.
Characters and Factions
Max, Pete, Willow and Hoops return as the four playable teens. The people and creatures around them:
- Dr. Wendell Tully and BURG.L. Tully invented the SPAC.R shrinking machine, and BURG.L is his robot assistant.
- Sloane. Ominent’s new spokeswoman. She organized the ceremony, ran the company’s hidden labs in the park and takes over as the teens’ guide.
- The Masked Stranger. A masked teen who commands corrupted insects and serves as the main antagonist of the story content available now. Bandit, her wolf spider, steps into fights once she is weakened.
- O.R.C. forces. The Stranger’s corrupted bugs carry military ranks, among them Major Diesel, Captains Nitro and Turbo, Lieutenant Blade and General Berserker. Most of these bosses can be skipped.
- AXL. An optional tarantula boss that shrugs off most damage while standing. Hitting the scar on its abdomen after a stun is the way to hurt it.
- King Dozer. An optional lizard boss whose den sits beside the Greenhouse, behind a gate that needs a Tier 2 Omni-Wrench.
- Pond residents. CNK robots and Pond Jockeys patrol the shores, and the Diving Bell Spider returns beneath the surface. The Toe Biter, a new predator, can also be tamed as an amphibious Buggy.
Editions
The game comes in two editions:
- Standard Edition: the base game only.
- Founder’s Edition (“Minotaurs, Myrmidons, and Mants: Oh My!”): the base game, four cosmetic character skins with custom emotes, a digital artbook and a soundtrack.
Obsidian also hands the Tools of Yore decorative set to every player, so it is not a Founder’s perk. Steam and PlayStation label the game Early Access, while Xbox calls the same stage Game Preview.
