Game of Thrones: War for Westeros
Set in the world of HBO's Game of Thrones, War for Westeros is a real-time strategy game about commanding squads, capturing ground and tearing down rival keeps. Characters from the series, among them Jon Snow, Tywin Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen, take the field as heroes. PlaySide Studios is developing it for PC, with a Steam release planned for early 2027.
Top 3 Reasons to Play
- Four factions built on different mechanics instead of recoloured armies, each with an economy and unit roster of its own.
- Battles run on counters and physics. Spearmen stop cavalry, cavalry scatter archer formations, and giants can launch whole squads into the air.
- Skirmish locations come straight from the series, with the Wall, King's Landing and Ashemark in the Westerlands among those announced.
Story and Lore
Westeros is a continent of Seven Kingdoms ruled, at least on paper, from the Iron Throne in King's Landing, and the series' politics come down to who sits on it. House Stark holds the North from Winterfell, House Lannister the Westerlands from Casterly Rock, and House Targaryen's claim arrives with dragons. Beyond the Wall, the Night King marches an army of the dead.
War for Westeros plays inside that conflict instead of retelling it from the sidelines. The solo campaign is built around famous battles and turning points from the series, and PlaySide's reveal trailer showed outcomes that depart from the television version. Because the Night King's army is a playable side, the war is not limited to the Great Houses contesting the throne.
Gameplay and Mechanics
The format is classic RTS. Every side starts from a Keep, and losing it ends the match; the alternative route to victory is capturing and holding every control point. Gold and influence pay for buildings, upgrades and units, building plots scattered across a map yield extra income once claimed, and captured outposts open new ground to build on.
- Heroes level up during a match, unlock abilities at milestones and give passive bonuses to nearby troops. Some fight at the front, others coordinate from behind it.
- Skirmish formats in early builds were 1v1 matches in Domination (hold territory) and Annihilation (destroy the enemy).
Characters and Factions
- House Stark: northern infantry, joined by the direwolves Ghost and Grey Wind. Alliances with the Night's Watch and the Free Folk unlock stronger units, giants and mammoths among them. Heroes: Robb Stark, and Jon Snow, who leads from the front and lifts morale.
- House Lannister: an army that runs on money, with strong income, fortified buildings and expensive mercenary contracts. Wildfire is part of the toolkit and burns the player's own troops as well. Heroes: Jaime Lannister, and Tywin, who works further back and improves army efficiency.
- House Targaryen: Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons, which can burn down fortresses and other structures from the air.
- The Night King's Army of the Dead: raises fallen enemy soldiers as new units. The Night King commands it in person.
