In the late 1960s and early 1970s, as part of a major fleet renewal program, New York’s Long Island Rail Road, funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, purchased 770 M1 EMUs built by Budd and General Electric. Named Metropolitans, the M1s quickly became the backbone of LIRR's electric operations. To keep up with growing business and expanded electrified routes, LIRR and MTA acquired 174 similar M3 EMUs from Budd between 1984 and 1986.

The LIRR M3 cars, constructed of stainless steel and stretching 85 feet in length, operate on DC current from LIRR’s third-rail system. Each car is powered by four 160-horsepower traction motors and rides on General Steel GSI trucks. These versatile EMUs, built as two-car "married pairs," can reach speeds up to 80 mph (129 km/h) on the LIRR.

Sporting yellow, gray, and silver livery, the LIRR M3 and M1 EMUs have become railroading icons. While the M1s were retired in 2007, the LIRR M3s continue to operate and are expected to remain in service for several more years.
