The Dash 8-40CW, also referred to as the C40-8W by general electric, was manufactured in GE's Erie, Pennsylvania factory between 1989 and 1994. GE built 847 of the six-axle (C-C) diesels with 4,000 horsepower, which were driven by the builder's powerful seven-cycle 7FDL16 power plant. The C40-8W, an evolutionary improvement on GE's cutting-edge diesel lineup that started with the "Dash 7" series, is visually striking due to its adoption of the fashionable "North American Cab."
