Japanese video games focus mainly on amazing storyline, unique playstyle with great buy quite difficult gameplay mechanics. A good example of a Japanese games franchise that leaked to other continents is Dark Souls. Dark Souls are known for the difficulty and being unforgiving. The Dark Souls franchise became so popular it gave birth to a completely new video games genre called 'souls-like'. Another great example of Japanese video game that became a great hit in other countries is the Persona franchise. Persona video games is a bit easier to distinguish and categorize as 'Japanese video game' because of its anime-like graphics style with vivid storyline and turn-based combat. Another amazing Japanese video game revolving around turn-based combat is the Final Fantasy video games franchise. All of those games have a unique feel to them, with references to different cultures of the western world. There's so many of them it's almost near-impossible to list all of the little flavors and references to the Japanese culture!
