During Gamescom 2023 in September, we were fortunate to get a sneak peek and hands-on experience with the game. Although the overall experience was positive, we did encounter a few issues that the developers decided to address before the official release. We were delighted to learn that they have chosen to take the time to refine and polish the game, ensuring that it will be ready for its anticipated launch in 2024.
The producers clarified that the demo showcased the game in its authentic state, devoid of any artificially polished fragments created for marketing purposes. It is important to note that GSC Game World, the studio behind it, hails from Ukraine, and their game production has been significantly impacted by the ongoing war. In light of these circumstances, let us truly appreciate the tremendous efforts of the producers and patiently await the release of the highly anticipated sequel to this beloved classic shooter.
The iconic shooter comes back with a sequel
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the long-awaited sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl, a cult classic first-person shooter released in 2007 by Ukrainian game developer GSC Game World. Set in a post-apocalyptic world located within the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, players assume the role of stalkers—scavengers and treasure-seekers who traverse the contaminated zone in search of artifacts, valuable loot, and other secrets.
In S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl, players explore an even more massive open world filled with new creatures, locations, and storylines while fighting through the dangerous Zone.
Time to enter the Zone again
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will be an open-world game, so prepare yourself for hours of exploration. The game is going to be huge and seamless, with more than 60 square kilometers of land. That will also mean we will need quite a lot of time to discover everything the Zone has prepared for us. Since the game is a mix of survival, horror, and sim game, you can be more than sure you’ll experience an incredible adventure.
The world is already looking visually stunning: those who have seen photos of the real-life Zone will recognize many characteristic points, including the famous Duga Radar. Players will also re-visit locations from previous games. The developers made sure to truly recreate the gloomy atmosphere of Pripyat, the nuclear power plant, and surrounding areas. Of course, the game will be much spookier: let’s not forget about the creatures roaming this land, anomalies, and other humans.
The game will feature a dynamic day-night cycle as well as realistic weather conditions. That, mixed with realistic visuals and horror elements, will surely make the game an outstanding piece of art. To further make S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl even more realistic, the game will feature “A-life 2.0,” a new life-simulating system to make the adventure in the zone near lifelike. Artificial intelligence in the game promises to enrich the gameplay experience like never before! For example, it will massively enrich the NPC behaviour and make the entire world respond to our choices and actions.
Gameplay and story details
Players can expect to be immersed in a thrilling story affected by their choices and decisions. Up until now, the story has only been hinted at in trailers. Now that we have a release date and more information is becoming available, we can start getting excited about what’s coming. While there are no details on the story, we know we’ll play as Skif, and the events will continue the story from the previous Stalker game. Nevertheless, you don’t have to know the lore of previous instalments in order to enjoy Heart of Chornobyl.
The game is a first-person shooter; we will have access to over 30 different weapon types, so everyone will find a weapon that suits them perfectly. Moreover, we will be able to modify these weapons to further tailor them to our preferences.
Combat will be as intense as ever: you’ll need to think strategically if you want to survive in dangerous areas. Speaking of danger, players will meet a plethora of new challenges:
- New mutants with different behavior types,
- Different anomalies,
- New and familiar competing factions.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl gameplay swears to be even more immersive and dynamic than before. To survive in this place, players must not only rely on their skills but also on tactics and new gadgets to look for anomalies. Moreover, you’ll have to plan your exploration carefully and be mindful of enemies scattered around. Mutants boast unique subtypes, and their behavior will be less predictable. Players will need to be on their toes for sure!
Multiplayer features and modding
For those who love multiplayer games, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will, at some point, feature multiplayer as a free update. Unfortunately, that’s all we know about this functionality. If any news appears on this topic, we will update this section right away! That’s not everything. Creative players who love experimenting with the source material will be able to create and use mods.

While we don’t know exactly when Stalker 2 will be released, the developers stated the title will be available for purchase in December 2023. For now, the confirmed platforms are PC and Xbox Series X|S. Moreover, it will be available on Game Pass for both PC and Xbox users.
