Street Fighter 6: Release date, roster, and more

05 January 2023

Without a doubt, Street Fighter is one of the most popular fighting game series. Soon, Capcom’s flagship franchise will get a new installment. Let’s wrap up what we know about Street Fighter 6, including its release date, characters, and gameplay.

Update: 04.21.2023

The Street Fighter series

Street Fighter 6 will be the next installment in the series that needs no introduction. Everything started in 1987, but the first Street Fighter game wasn’t very good. It was its 1992 sequel that hit the jackpot. With polished gameplay and a vast set of colorful characters, Street Fighter II became an enormous hit and started the golden age of fighting games. The game received a number of updated versions, extending the rosters of playable warriors. Today, characters such as Ken, Ryu, and Chun-Li are nothing short of iconic.

Capcom, of course, developed the series with sequels and spin-offs. Street Fighter even joined forces with another fighting game powerhouse – Tekken. Sadly, Street Fighter x Tekken wasn’t the hit everyone expected. Also, as of now, the latest Street Fighter game hasn’t had a smooth launch. Street Fighter V suffered from a lack of content and was plagued by bugs. Fortunately, Capcom was able to recover from this awful start. Consequently, today, Street Fighter V is considered one of the best fighting games. Its reign, however, will end soon, as Street Fighter 6 is on the horizon.

Release date

Capcom announced the game on February 21, 2022, and revealed the first gameplay trailer in June. Street Fighter 6 will be released on June 2, 2023, and it’s coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Furthermore, SF6 arcade machines will be available exclusively in Japan. Some players could play it before the official premiere thanks to the closed beta tests held in October and December.

Gameplay and new features

The game offers the same bright and colorful graphic style as its predecessor. The gameplay of Street Fighter 6 remains faithful to the standards set by the series. Therefore, it offers dynamic 1v1 2D fights. There are, of course, new features. For instance, SF6 introduces the Drive System, which allows fighters to perform offensive and defensive moves. Players can also choose whether they want to use the classic control system or try the new one, which combines a single button and directions.

Another essential difference is that the game emphasizes online activities. One of the three main game modes in Street Fighter 6 is Battle Hub. It’s an online area where we can meet and fight players from all over the world. The single-player story mode has been reworked, too. Now it’s called World Tour and offers action-adventure gameplay. Players will create their own customizable avatars to travel the world, explore a 3D environment, and meet Street Fighter 6 characters. If you’re not interested in a plot or any social activities, you should try the Fighting Ground mode, which offers some good old fights.

Street Fighter 6’s character list

According to the game’s official Twitter account, the initial roster of Street Fighter 6 consists of 18 characters. Many fan-favorite warriors will be back, including Luke, Juri, Dee Jay, Cammy, Ryu, E. Honda, Blanka, Guile, Ken, Chun-Li, Zangief, and Dhalsim. It’s worth emphasizing that Street Fighter 6 introduces five completely new fighters:

  • Jamie,
  • Manon,
  • Kimberly,
  • Marisa,
  • Lily,
  • JP.

The game’s promotional materials are focused on Luke and Ryu, so we assume this duo will play the main part in Street Fighter 6’s story. Furthermore, Capcom will surely add more characters as DLC, and the Street Fighter 6 roster will grow over time. For instance, SFV had 16 warriors at launch and now offers over 40 playable characters.

Even though Street Fighter 6 hasn’t been released yet, Capcom has revealed four characters that will join the roster as the Season 1 DLCs.

  • Rashid (summer 2023),
  • A.K.I. (autumn 2023),
  • Ed (winter 2024),
  • Akuma (spring 2024).
