Star Wars Outlaws: A new video game set in the galaxy far, far away

10 April 2024

EA’s 10-year exclusivity for Star Wars video games has ended, opening doors for new interesting titles set in the universe of Sith and Jedi, such as Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws. Let’s take a closer look and summarize everything we know about the upcoming title.

UPDATE: April 10, 2024

Creators and release date

Ubisoft revealed Star Wars Outlaws in January 2021, but fans had to wait until June 2022 to see a glimpse of the new Star Wars game. Its cinematic trailer was one of the most exciting announcements of Xbox Showcase. It was followed by gameplay footage that has built hype and raised players’ expectations.

It’s also worth mentioning that Massive Entertainment, the developer known primarily for Tom Clancy’s The Division and its sequel, is the studio behind Outlaws. On April 9, Ubisoft revealed a story trailer and announced that the new Star Wars game would come out on August 30, 2024. The publisher was forced to make this statement, as the release date leaked to the web a few hours earlier. Star Wars Outlaws will be available on PC and next-gen consoles: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X.

Star Wars Outlaws – plot

Star Wars Outlaws takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. In the previous canon, now known as Legends, this gap was filled by Shadows of the Empire, a multimedia project including a video game, novel, and comic book. Unlike SotE, the new game most likely won’t feature Luke, Leia, Chewie, or Lando; hence, we don’t think that the new game will try to serve as a direct connection between Episodes V and VI. However, some iconic characters from the original trilogy will inevitably make a cameo appearance. Apart from the timeline, there’s also another resemblance between both projects. They introduce similar new characters. In Shadows of the Empire, we meet a smuggler and mercenary, Dash Rendar, while the new Star Wars game follows the story of a thief called Kay Vess.

The protagonist, portrayed by Humberly González, travels with her cute merqual companion, Nix. Kay’s ultimate mission will be to pull off the most ambitious heist in the Outer Rim Territories and rob Sliro, the leader of Zerek Besh, a rising crime syndicate. However, this turns out to be only a part of a much more complex intrigue. On her journey, Kay will explore the criminal underworld thriving in the shadow of the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance. She will also visit the iconic Star Wars places, including Jabba’s palace on Tattooine. The story trailer reveals that the protagonist will meet the mighty Hutt and see
frozen-in-carbonite Han Solo.

Star Wars Outlaws – gameplay

Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, Jedi: Survivor, have proven that Star Wars fans love single-player action-adventure games. The upcoming game follows the same path and aims to provide a compelling solo experience. The official gameplay footage demonstrates that Star Wars Outlaws combines elements of stealth games and TPP shooters. Kay can also drive vehicles, including hoverbikes. Moreover, she pilots spaceships, so players will be able to engage in space battles in the new Star Wars game, which seems particularly exciting. Completing missions and making choices will affect the protagonist’s reputation.

Open world

Ubisoft advertises Outlaws as the first Star Wars game set in an open world. However, this statement is not entirely true because 2022’s Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also lets players explore an open world. Some even argue that the label of the first Star Wars sandbox belongs to Star Wars Galaxies, a 20-year-old MMORPG.

Although not necessarily the first, Star Wars Outlaws will be the biggest open-world game set in the universe created by George Lucas. It will let us explore numerous massive planets, including the iconic Tatooine. According to the developers, each of them brings exciting and unique adventures and interesting places to visit, such as cantinas and buzzing-with-life cities.

However, many players are concerned that such a vast world means trouble. For instance, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was panned for featuring a gigantic open world that wasn’t filled with enough compelling content. The game’s creative director, Julian Gerighty, calms them by saying that Star Wars Outwards won’t be a 300-hour-long unfinishable RPG.
