Hazelight Studios earned itself a name thanks to It Takes Two, a captivating and incredibly entertaining cooperative adventure game. Hence, I can’t wait to see Split Fiction, the developer’s new release.

Split Fiction – Release Date
Split Fiction was one of the most exciting announcements at The Game Awards in December 2024. Hazelight Studios set its release date for March 6, 2025, so players haven’t had to wait particularly long. The game is available on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and PC. Ditching PS4 and Xbox One can upset some players. However, it should allow the creators to deliver better visuals and use all the Unreal Engine 5 capabilities.

Split Fiction – Gameplay
Judging by the first trailer, Split Fiction’s gameplay will resemble It Takes Two. We have a split screen and two protagonists with complementary powers. Those skills change at each level, constantly posing new challenges and not allowing players to get bored.
It may be either good or bad news. Good news because the studio’s previous game is outstanding. Bad news because duplicating older ideas kills creativity. Nonetheless, we’re not talking about a decade-long franchise where each installment is a reskinned copy of its predecessor. I sincerely believe that even if Hazelight follows the way paved by It Takes Two, it can still provide us with something great. Even if Split Fiction won’t be able to recreate the awe effect of its predecessor, it can be incredibly entertaining.

I understand that some players are upset that Hazelight games are designed for two players, so they can’t be successfully played solo. Trust me, I tried to complete some early It Takes Two levels alone. It was a nightmare, and even though I could reach the first boss, defeating the monstrous vacuum cleaner was impossible. Fortunately, you don’t need two copies of It Takes Two or Split Fiction to play online. Thanks to Friend’s Pass, only one of two players has to own the game.
Split Fiction – Story
Like gameplay, the plot also echoes It Takes Two. The previous Hazelight game follows Cody and May, a couple planning their divorce. Across the crazy journey, they rekindle their feelings. In Split Fiction, players fill the shoes of two rival authors. Mio, who’s into science fiction and fantasy writer Zoe. After they have been trapped in a simulation that is supposed to steal their ideas, the protagonists have to overcome their differences, learn how to cooperate, and, ultimately, become friends. Consequently, I assume we will get a heartwarming story without shocking plot twists.
A more interesting fact is that Split Fiction will take us to levels inspired by both sci-fi and fantasy. Hence, one mission lets us ride majestic dragons, and the next makes us fight deadly robots in some futuristic setting.
