LAST UPDATE: May 15, 2025

Table of contents

Dynasty Warriors: Origins

  • Release date: January 17, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X

The game from Omega Force and Koei Tecmo offers a reinvigorated hack-and-slash experience rooted in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This entry focuses on the novel’s first half, presenting a more detailed narrative as a new protagonist with amnesia traverses the chaotic Three Kingdoms, meeting iconic figures like Liu Bei and Lu Bu. Combat will be revamped, emphasizing parries, dodges, and tactical options, but it should retain the series’ hallmark crowd-smashing action.

The addition of an explorable overworld map introduces towns, NPCs, and missions, enhancing immersion. Players will enjoy in-depth customization through weapons, arts, and skill trees. Though tailored for single-player with strategic troop commands, Origins lacks a co-op mode, a notable omission for series fans.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

  • Release date: February 30, 2025
  • Platforms: PC

It’s not a new game, but the PC premiere of the esteemed PS5 exclusive will be one of the most thrilling premieres this January.

This action-packed sequel expands the adventures of Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Players can enjoy new suits, a New Game+ mode, and face iconic foes like Venom and Kraven in an immersive Marvel universe. It also looks stunning because the game offers enhanced ray tracing and graphical improvements.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

  • Release date: February 4, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X

The sequel to Warhorse Studios’ hit action RPG continues Henry’s gripping tale in 15th-century Bohemia. This open-world game features two expansive settings – Trosky’s lush countryside and the bustling, historic city of Kutná Hora. Players can explore a map twice as large as the original, encountering enhanced realism through new mechanics like crossbows, early firearms, and immersive life simulation.

Choices and their consequences play a vital role, with every action influencing NPC’s behavior and Henry’s progression. Combat has been refined for accessibility, offering dynamic strategies with aggressive gameplay rewarding mastery. The game includes five hours of cutscenes and over 80 hours of gameplay.

Civilization VII

  • Release date: February 11, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

While most sequels in well-established franchises tend to deliver more of the same, Firaxis Games will try to bring a fresh take on empire-building strategy. Featuring a novel three-age progression: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern, players can lead unique civilizations such as Egypt, Maya, or Rome, adapting strategies as they advance through history. The mix-and-match leader mechanics bring flexibility in leadership styles. We will also get new technologies, buildings, and gameplay features.

Strategic depth remains central, with streamlined mechanics like the removal of barbarians and workers for a more dynamic experience. Civilization VII promises reimagined combat, intricate diplomacy, and innovative ways to grow your empire. I hope the changes work fine and prove to other developers that it’s worth shaking up the petrified formula.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

  • Release date: February 14, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

The Assassin’s Creed series set sail for feudal Japan during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Featuring dual protagonists, Naoe, a skilled shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai who has already caused some controversy, the game blends stealth, parkour, and cinematic combat in a dynamic world full of seasonal changes. Players can wield weapons like katanas, shuriken, and kusarigama and take advantage of new mechanics such as shadow-based stealth, grappling hooks, and destructible environments.

The game promises a reimagined open world, non-linear missions, and a new chapter in the never-ending conflict between Assassins and Templars. The game emphasizes strategy and player choice, allowing for unique approaches to combat and reconnaissance, all set against the vibrant backdrop of 16th-century Japan. That’s theory. In fact, I expect Shadows to be a clone of the previous Ubisoft games but with a different setting. Nonetheless, it can still be an enjoyable game if it avoids irritating bugs and an overgrown map with no exciting side activities.

Avowed

  • Release date: February 18, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

We expected to see the new RPG from Obsidian Entertainment in 2024, but the release has been postponed. I hope the current release date is final so we can return to the rich world of Eora from the Pillars of Eternity series this February. Players take on the role of an envoy investigating the mysterious Dream Scourge in the Living Lands, a region brimming with diverse, dense biomes. The game offers a flexible combat system where players mix magic, melee, and firearms to create dynamic strategies.

Players can switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. Two companions can join your adventure, each adding depth to the story and combat. With skill trees, weapon customization, and choices influencing the narrative, Avowed should provide us with an engaging RPG experience, blending Obsidian’s hallmark character development with immersive gameplay. I believe it can be a Game of the Year candidate and proof that a new IP can thrive in a world dominated by sequels and remakes.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered

  • Release date: February 14, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Aspyr did fantastic work remastering the first three games featuring Lara Croft. On this Valentine’s Day, the beloved archeologist will invite us to embark on the rekindled versions of the following three adventures:

  • Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation,
  • Tomb Raider: Chronicles,
  • Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.

Players can experience remastered visuals or toggle back to the original look. The collection introduces modern controls for smoother gameplay while retaining the classic tank-style option for purists. Features like photo mode and boss health bars add contemporary touches, making iconic locations such as Cairo, Paris, and Rome more engaging.

I’m particularly curious about The Angel of Darkness. This game was the series’ lowest point. Its reviews were devastating, and so were the sales numbers. As a result, Eidos decided to take Lara from Core Design and handle the series over to Crystal Dynamics. Will the remaster be able to fix such a tainted game? Will it allow players to discover something hidden under the layer of bugs and pesky controls?

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

  • Release date: February 21, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio thrusts players into the pirate-filled waters of Hawaii with fan-favorite Goro Majima. Waking up on Rich Island with no memory, Majima leads a pirate crew in an action-packed adventure to uncover hidden treasures and reclaim his past.

The game features two dynamic fighting styles: Mad Dog, a speed-focused approach, and Sea Dog, utilizing dual cutlasses and pistols. Players will explore islands like Madlantis and Nele while engaging in exciting ship battles, boarding enemy vessels, and upgrading their own ship, Goromaru. Mini-games like Dragon Kart and Karaoke return alongside new additions for endless entertainment. With its emphasis on exploration, sprawling locales, and cinematic combat, it can be the craziest 2025 game.

Split Fiction

  • Release date: March 6, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

Split Fiction is the new co-op action-adventure game from Hazelight Studios, the creators of the award-winning It Takes Two. Players follow Mio, a sci-fi writer, and Zoe, a fantasy author, who are trapped in a simulation merging their story worlds. Together, they must tackle alternating levels filled with distinct mechanics, from raising dragons in high fantasy to navigating sci-fi landscapes with magnetized puzzles.

Building on Hazelight’s co-op legacy, Split Fiction offers inventive puzzle platforming, genre-themed gameplay, and engaging mini-games like hoverboard races and hilarious side missions. The game emphasizes cooperative gameplay, requiring teamwork to conquer challenges. A Friend’s Pass ensures a friend can join for free, with crossplay between consoles and PC. It Takes Two was a blast and a surprise winner of The Game of the Year title, so Split Fiction has big shoes to fill.

Commandos: Origins

  • Release date: April 9, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S

Even though Pyro Studios is now in the paradise for the defunct video game developers, its most famous series lives on. The upcoming installment, Commandos: Origins, was created by Claymore Game Studios. This real-time tactics game puts you in charge of six unique characters, each with specialized abilities, including Jack O’Hara, the Green Beret, and Rene Duchamp, the Spy. Through over 10 missions set in historically authentic locations, from Arctic plains to African deserts, you’ll use stealth, strategy, and teamwork to outsmart the enemy in high-risk operations.

With modern controls and varied mission paths, you can infiltrate enemy bases, stage daring rescues, and sabotage critical targets. For added depth, a cooperative multiplayer mode allows you and a friend to tackle the missions together, online or via local split-screen. Commandos: Origins aims at tactical precision, immersive WWII settings, and a tribute to the series’ classic roots, ensuring it will captivate longtime fans and new players alike. If you’re not sure if the new developer can live up to the series’ legacy, there’s a demo you can try out.

Football Manager 25

  • Release date: March 2025 Canceled
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, Netflix

Moving the release of FM 25 from 2024 to 2025 was a big surprise, so I understand the series’ fans ‘concerns. Particularly that FM25 has great ambitions. The game promises improved graphics, immersive volumetric player animations, and a redesigned user interface for smoother gameplay. For the first time, Women’s Football will be integrated, allowing players to manage men’s and women’s teams within a unified system, complete with official leagues and licenses. Fans can enjoy managing fully licensed Premier League clubs with authentic logos, kits, and player photos. The game maintains its core realism while enhancing match visuals and data presentation.

In February, Sports Interactive announced that FM25 had been canceled and the team would focus on the next installment.

The Alters

The Alters is a new game created by 11 Bit Studios, known for such moving hits as This War of Mine and Frostpunk. The upcoming survival game follows the story of Jan Dolski, a worker stranded on a dangerous planet. To survive, Jan creates alternate versions of himself, called the alters. Each of the alters is shaped by pivotal life choices, thus having distinct personalities and skills.

Players must build and manage a moving base, gather resources, and make strategic decisions to escape deadly solar radiation. The game explores the impact of life choices while tasking players to manage relationships with Jan’s alternate selves in a race for survival.

Dune: Awakening

  • Release date: June 10, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X

What a time to be a Dune fan! There are visually astonishing adaptations of the first Frank Herbert novel directed by Denis Villeneuve, a well-received 4X strategy game, Dune: Spice Wars, and the Dune: Prophecy HBO series. In 2025, Dune: Awakening will join the list. It’s an open-world survival MMO set on the harsh desert planet of Arrakis.

Players will explore a shared, dynamic world with thousands of others, navigating political intrigue and battling environmental threats like deadly sandworms and sandstorms. Resource management, including water and valuable spice, is key to survival. With crafting, base-building, and forming alliances with factions and guilds, the game plans to deliver an immersive experience blending survival mechanics and strategic gameplay. Sounds ambitious, isn’t it?

The Last of Us Part II Remastered

  • Release date: April 3, 2025
  • Platforms: PC

It’s going to be an outstanding year for the fans of the post-apocalyptic world created by Naughty Dog. We will get the second season of the TV show featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, and The Last of Us Part II will come out for PC.

PC players will get the remastered version that was available solely on PS5. This edition includes the base game and the praised additional roguelike mode, No Return.

Doom: The Dark Ages

  • Release date: May 15, 2025
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel that takes us to a brutal world inspired by medieval aesthetics and shows Doom Slayer’s backstory. The game will put much more focus on the narrative, giving the player moral choices and multiple possible endings.

When it comes to gameplay, The Dark Ages also differs from its predecessors, Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal. Combat is more grounded. It doesn’t mean that it won’t be a dynamic shooter, but this time, we won’t have to run or jump around the map to annihilate demons efficiently. If I understand correctly, we will feel more like a mighty knight in plate armor than a nimble ninja warrior. We also, besides firearms, get powered-up versions of weapons from the medieval arsenal, including a mace and flail.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

  • Release date: June 26, 2025
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5

The long-awaited sequel to Hideo Kojima’s action-adventure masterpiece will come out in June. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be initially available exclusively on PlayStation 5.

The game will continue the story of Sam Bridges and feature Norman Reedus as the protagonist as well as Léa Seydoux (Fragile), Troy Baker (Higgs), Elle Fanning (Tomorrow), Debra Wilson (Doctor), Shioli Kutsuna (Rainy), Luca Marinelli (Neil), Alissa Jung (Lucy), and Alastair Duncan (the president). Players will also meet characters modeled after three esteemed directors: George Miller (Tarman), Fatih Akin (Dollman), and Nicolas Winding Refn (Heartman).

The upcoming installment in the Mafia series takes players to 1900s Sicily to explore the dark origins of organized crime. Playing as Enzo Favara, you’ll descend into the brutal mob world, wielding blades and firearms and mastering horseback rides through cobbled streets and sun-drenched countryside.

Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the game emphasizes rich storytelling, intense action, and period-authentic details, promising a cinematic, narrative-driven experience.

Ghost of Yotei

The Ghost of Tsushima sequel is set in Hokkaido over 300 years after the first game. Players will follow Atsu, a female warrior who plans to avenge her murdered family. Like its predecessor, Ghost of Yotei is a third-person action-adventure developed by Sucker Punch Productions.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

  • Release date: First half of 2025
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X

The road to its release is incredibly long and rocky. It has been postponed countless times, but finally, we have a new release date, or a release window, at least. According to The Chinese Room, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 will arrive in the first half of 2025.

This action RPG is set in a dark, modern-day Seattle. Players embody Phyre, an elder vampire awakened into a power struggle between clans like the Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim, and Ventrue. With rich storytelling and a focus on choices, players use supernatural abilities to survive, forge alliances, and influence the city’s fate.
