Edward Kenway Sails Again! Our Deep Dive into Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

13 July 2026

Ahoy, gamers! If you’ve been nostalgically humming sea shanties and longing for the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, it’s time to set sail. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is out, and it’s great, bringing Edward Kenway’s legendary pirate adventure to the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

A gorgeous pirate adventure

First things first: this game is drop-dead gorgeous. Powered by the modern Anvil engine, the 2013 classic has been radically transformed. We’re talking beautiful ray tracing, advanced physics that give realistic weight to hair and clothing, and incredible weather effects that make the open sea feel more alive—and dangerous—than ever.

Exploration has seen a massive quality-of-life improvement, too. Gone is the exhausting map flooded with endless, overwhelming icons. Instead, Resynced borrows the organic, discovery-led approach from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Points of interest only populate your map when you physically spot them or synchronize from a high vantage point, encouraging you to naturally explore the lush jungles and bustling streets of cities like Havana.

Vital gameplay changes

Yes, you read that right—Edward Kenway has finally learned how to crouch! It’s wild to think the original game lacked a dedicated crouch button, but its inclusion here completely revamps the stealth gameplay. You can now duck behind cover and scout ahead without awkwardly sprinting between patches of tall grass.

If stealth goes out the window, drawing your swords feels fresh and fiercely satisfying. Enemies now utilize a posture system rather than just a basic health bar. You’ll need to break their guard using well-timed parries and heavy attacks tailored to your currently equipped weapon. Once their posture is broken, you can execute brutal, one-button takedowns that chain together beautifully.

New story additions

Edward’s narrative arc is universally loved, and Ubisoft wisely left the core story intact while sprinkling in some fantastic additions. Expect expanded cutscenes that give fan-favorite characters like Blackbeard a little more screen time, alongside a brand-new endgame chapter that finally ties up a lingering loose end regarding an original villain. Quest design is also far more flexible—for instance, instead of grinding for cash to buy the diving bell, you can now creatively orchestrate a heist to steal it from guards.

As for the modern-day segments? The old first-person Abstergo office wandering is completely gone. In its place, the game ties into the Animus Hub system. You’ll tackle special “Rifts,” which offer unique platforming puzzles and a mysterious narrative involving a voice trapped within the Animus. While the progression feels a bit like a modern battle pass, it’s arguably a much more engaging pivot from the original’s divisive modern-day office sections.

The Verdict

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is exactly how remakes should be done. It preserves the swashbuckling soul of the original while seamlessly weaving in modern stealth mechanics, stunning visuals, and deeply enhanced naval combat. Whether you’re an old salt returning to the helm of your beloved Jackdaw or a greenhorn setting sail for the first time, the waters of the Caribbean are calling.
