Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight: Everything we know about the game

10 September 2025

Lego Horizon Adventures received mixed reviews, but now Lego action-adventure games have two powerful allies that can help them restore their place among bestsellers. They are TT Games, the studio behind the most successful releases featuring the famous brick and the caped crusader. Let’s summarize everything we know about Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

Story

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight was one of the most exciting announcements at this year’s Gamescom, at least for me. Initially, it was expected to be a caped version of the previous TT Games’ Lego game, The Skywalker Saga, which would recreate all three Star Wars trilogies. It would have been a notable shift, as the previous Batman games presented original stories. Apparently, the upcoming Batman game will combine both approaches.

As a result, there won’t be a brick recreation of the Batman movies, but we won’t get an entirely original adventure either. Legacy of the Dark Knight will let us follow Bruce Wayne’s path from his humble beginnings to becoming the Gotham criminals’ worst nightmare. Along the way, we will experience some original adventures as well as moments taken from the movies. In the reveal trailer, we can see scenes based on the Nolan trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises) and Matt Reeves’s The Batman.

We can also expect tons of references to the Batman lore and his rich history. For example, in the first official gameplay trailer, we can hear the famous Joker catchphrase from Tim Burton’s Batman (“You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?”) and a line from Batman Forever (“Oh no! It’s boiling acid!”).

Legacy of the Dark Knight: Gameplay

I don’t expect a radical change of the proven formula, but the upcoming Lego Batman seems to offer some welcome and noticeable gameplay changes. First of all, it looks like a mix of a Lego and Arkham game because it offers an open-world Gotham City that we can explore by gliding among buildings with a grappling hook or driving vehicles, including a wide range of Batmobiles. We’ll probably explore the city between the missions and find their additional activities, such as crimes to stop, puzzles to solve, and collectables to find.

Combat has also been altered. It adopts mechanics from Rocksteady titles. Consequently, we can hide on a gargoyle or in vents to perform a surprise attack or build devastating combos against multiple enemies.

Characters

The previous Lego titles from TT Games have featured countless playable characters. Legacy of the Dark Knight takes an entirely different direction. Instead of a legion of unlockable heroes, we will have only seven protagonists. Instead of alternate versions of the same characters, players can find their additional costumes.

Here’s a list of the confirmed playable characters:

  • Batman,
  • Jim Gordon,
  • Robin (Dick Grayson),
  • Nightwing,
  • Batgirl,
  • Catwoman,
  • Talia al Ghul.

All the characters have unique abilities, so in this aspect, Legacy of the Dark Knight resembles its predecessor. Of course, the caped heroes can’t exist without their archnemesis. Thus, we will meet a legion of supervillains, including the Joker, Bane, Poison Ivy, Penguin, and Ra’s al Ghul.

Legacy of the Dark Knight: Release date

TT Games and WB Games haven’t announced the exact premiere date. We only know that they plan to release Legacy of the Dark Knight in 2026. Hence, if there aren’t any delays, Batman and Lego fans won’t have to wait particularly long.

Platforms

The developer and publisher announced that Legacy of the Dark Knight will be available on PC, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Multiplayer

Like all the other Lego games from TT Games, the new Batman offers local co-op for two players, but we won’t be able to join forces with friends online. Hence, if you want to share Dark Knight’s journey, you have to sit in front of the same screen.
