Every gaming gear needs a system seller. Nintendo had Mario, Sega had Sonic, and PS VR2 will tempt us with Horizon Call of the Mountain. Let’s wrap up everything we know about the Horizon Zero Dawn spin-off.
Ryas – a new hero
Horizon Call of the Mountain is the first spin-off of the Guerrilla Games hit series. The action still takes place in the 31st century in a world overruled by animal-like machines; however, unlike Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, it doesn’t feature Aloy as the protagonist. This time, players will follow the story of Ryas, a member of the Carja in Shadow Carja territory who took part in the Carja civil war. Now he’s seeking redemption for his past sins. To earn forgiveness and freedom, Ryas agrees to embark on a dangerous expedition to investigate a mysterious threat hanging over the Sundom territory.
During this thrilling adventure, you’ll meet many new characters but also some familiar faces. It’s clearly worth mentioning that among the NPCs that Ryas meets on his road to redemption is Aloy, the protagonist of the previous Horizon games.
Horizon VR
Call of the Mountain is not only the first Horizon spin-off but also the first installment in the series developed for virtual reality. The game was developed by Guerrilla Games in cooperation with Firesprite, a British studio behind such VR games as The Persistence, Air Force Special Ops: Nightfall, and The Playroom VR. Furthermore, Horizon Call of the Mountain will be the first PlayStation VR2 exclusive title. As a result, the release date was set for February 22, 2023, the same day the new Sony headset will hit the shelves.
Sony hopes that Horizon Call of the Mountain will encourage players to buy PlayStation VR2. To achieve this goal, the game should demonstrate all the advantages of the new headset. Therefore, we believe it will provide breathtaking graphics, realistic animations, intuitive movements, and other features that will make us feel like we’re in the Horizon world.

Gameplay
Horizon Call of the Mountain is an action-adventure game. Consequently, you’ll explore the game’s world, while climbing will be one of the main activities. Rayas will also have to prove his fighting skills to survive encounters with the ferocious machines ruling the land. As the story progresses, he gains access to new skills, gear, and weapons. There will also be a possibility to collect raw ingredients and craft items. One of the major differences between the new and previous Horizon releases is the perspective. Call of the Mountain is a VR game; hence, we will observe the world through Ray’s eyes, while Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West feature a third-person perspective.
Horizon Call of the Mountain also offers a game mode focused on exploring, designed to let the players enjoy the beauty of the game’s world and discover all the PS VR2 capabilities.
