Lego Horizon Adventures: What should we expect?

26 July 2024

The revolution is coming to the brick world. Lego games from TT Games get us used to some gameplay patterns; however, Lego Horizon Adventures was created by another studio. It means that we can either get a breath of fresh air or a failed experiment.

Lego meets Horizon again

The upcoming game, officially announced this July at Summer Game Fest, isn’t Aloy’s first trip to Legoland. In May 2022, Lego released the Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck set. It contained over 1200 pieces and was designed for adult customers. Now, Lego and Guerrilla Games aim at an even wider audience.

Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West received ESRB Teen and PEGI 16 ratings due to such elements as blood, language, mild sexual themes, violence, and the use of alcohol. Undoubtedly, the Lego incarnation of Alloy will include only cartoon violence and will be considered kid-friendly.

Release date and platforms

The exact release date has not been revealed yet. However, the game should come out this holiday season. It’s a logical move because Lego games are always a strong contender when it comes to fighting for the best places on Christmas gift lists. The game will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5. Hence, it will be the first Horizon installment to get a multiplatform release from day one. All the previous releases debuted as Sony exclusives. Horizon Call of the Mountain can be played solely on the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset.

Gameplay

TT Games has been developing Lego action-adventure games for ages. Lego Horizon Adventures, produced by Studio Gobo, breaks with this tradition. As a result, the gameplay is one of the biggest mysteries. The previous games, even if they tried something new, remained faithful to the core mechanics presented in Lego Star Wars: The Video Game and other titles over a decade ago.

One of the keys to the Lego games’ success was couch co-op, which allows parents and kids to embark on an adventure together. Lego Horizon Adventures will have this mode, too. The game will also feature building mechanics and customization elements, which are mandatory for any Lego game. Combat looks fun but quirkier than in TT Games. For instance, in one of the trailers, we see Aloy hitting an opponent with a giant brick separator. However, the overall tone seems similar to what we already know.

The big change regards the view. Unlike Lego Skywalker Saga or DC Super-Villains, Horizon Adventures uses an isometric perspective. I wonder how it will affect the gameplay, but I believe that such a change was necessary to make the new title distinctive at first sight.

Story

Lego Horizon Adventures will offer an original story set in a world overrun by animal-like machines. Aloy and her friends will have to stop the malicious plot of Helis and his sun-worshippers cult. During the adventure, players will explore different regions and meet Horizon’s iconic creatures, including the majestic Tallnecks.
