We still don’t know what’s happening with the Sands of Time remake, but it doesn’t mean it’s not a good time for the Prince of Persia series. We got a surprisingly good The Lost Crown in January, and now another installment is on its way to our PCs and consoles. Let’s talk about The Rogue Prince of Persia.
The new Prince of Persia
At the beginning of April, Insider Gaming announced that Ubisoft was going to publish this year The Rogue Prince of Persia, a brand-new installment in the esteemed series. A few days later, the rumor turned out to be true, and the game was officially revealed.
The Rogue Prince of Persia was brought to life by Evil Empire. And it’s not a description of the story; it’s a fact, as the French studio behind the game is actually called Evil Empire. It’s the developer known for highly-praised Dead Cells expansions, including the Return to Castlevania DLC. It means that we’ll get two new Prince of Persia games this year. However, The Rogue Prince of Persia is not connected with The Lost Crown. It features a different protagonist, setting, and mechanics.
Prince of Persia The Roguer: gameplay
The Rogue Prince of Persia resembles The Lost Crown and classic installments in the series, as it’s a platformer game that requires lots of jumping, puzzle-solving, and fighting enemies. However, there’s a twist because Evil Empire introduces roguelite mechanics to the series. As a result, players may have to face some levels several times, each time trying a new approach and learning new things. Procedurally generated levels are another essential novelty.

Players can equip the hero with different primary and secondary weapons and medallions, providing unique effects. There’s also an option to upgrade the gear. It lets players create unique builds and try out what will work best against hordes of regular enemies and bosses.
The Rogue Prince of Persia: the story
We will follow a nameless protagonist who must prevent the Hun’s invasion of the city of Ctesiphon. I assume the action is set in 395 AD, during the Hunnic invasion of the Sasanian Empire. However, it’s only a fun fact because Prince of Persia has always been a fantasy series with no interest in providing historical accuracy. Consequently, unnatural elements can also be found in this installment. For instance, the enemy hordes are under the influence of dark magic, which makes them even more formidable.
The Rogue Prince of Persia: graphics
One of the most distinctive things about The Rogue Prince is its visuals. The game offers cartoon graphics inspired by classic Franco-Belgian comic books. I’m afraid that some players won’t be keen on this aesthetic; nonetheless, it undeniably helps the game stand out from other indie titles and previous Prince installments.

The Rogue Prince of Persia: release and future development
The early access version of the game will come out on May 14, 2024. So far, The Rogue Prince of Persia is available exclusively on PC. Additional platforms may join in the future because the developer plans to develop the game. The Rogue Prince of Persia will be enhanced with new opponents, biomes, weapons, and story chapters. Evil Empire promises to hear gamers and include their suggestions. The history shows how well the studio took care of Dead Cells. Hence, I assume that it will develop its original project at least as carefully.
