After years of waiting, we will finally get a new Prince of Persia game. However, the upcoming title doesn’t resemble the latest installments in the series. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown returns to the franchise’s platformer roots.
The series
The first installments in the series created by Jordan Mechner are undisputable classics that paved the way for the cinematic platformer genre. 1999’s Prince of Persia 3D wasn’t as good. Fortunately, The Sands of Time (2003), Warrior Within (2004), The Two Thrones (2005), Prince of Persia (2008), and The Forgotten Sands (2010) were exceptionally entertaining. Unfortunately for the iconic series, Assassin’s Creed, a series offering similar gameplay and setting, debuted about the same time. Ubisoft chose to bet on its new franchise and hid the Prince in a drawer to avoid making a competition for Assassin’s Creed.

Nonetheless, there has been a plan to release the remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Unfortunately, the trailer for the new versions was terrible, and players mercilessly panned it. As a result, Ubisoft decided to change the game’s developer and start from scratch, and currently, no one knows when Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake will come out. Many fans believed that the Prince of Persia series was virtually dead, but Ubisoft surprised them by announcing The Lost Crown.
The release date
Ubisoft revealed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown at Summer Game Fest 2023, which was held in June. The release date was set for January 18, 2023, and it hasn’t been changed. It will be available on all the most popular gaming platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, known for the Rayman franchise.

Plot
The Lost Crown’s story is not related to other Prince of Persia games. It introduces a new protagonist, a young warrior named Sargon. He must embark on a dangerous mission to the mysterious city of Mount Qaf to rescue Prince Ghassan from the hands of his kidnappers. The game’s world is inspired by Persian mythology. Thus, players can admire enormous landmarks and face legendary creatures, including the manticore.
Gameplay
Apparently, Ubisoft doesn’t want to run two similar franchises. Consequently, the new Prince of Persia game doesn’t follow the path of its successful predecessors. Instead, the series returns to its very roots, so Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a side-scrolling platformer action-adventure game.
Consequently, you will jump, slide, and use other moves to explore levels. Most of the time, you will fight various enemies, including formidable bosses. However, sometimes you have to solve puzzles. There are also some hidden rooms that players may find. Even though Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is not directly connected to its predecessors, Sargon and his enemies can use some time-based powers known from The Sands of Time. On your journey, you will collect Time Crystals that allow you to upgrade the protagonist’s weapons and abilities. Moreover, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown uses some elements of Metroidvania games. Consequently, as the game progresses, you will gain skills that let you reach previously unavailable places.
