Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is the long-awaited sequel to the Ninja Theory action-adventure masterpiece. Let’s talk about Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice’s successor and wrap up everything we know about the game.
UPDATE: April 29, 2024
Release date
Ninja Theory released Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in 2017. Both players and critics praised the game and appreciated making psychosis a central point of the narrative. No wonder everyone expected this indie gem to receive a sequel. The developer revealed in 2019 that the second installment would be called Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. Unfortunately, Ninja Theory kept players in the dark for quite some time, revealing only a glimpse of information about the game. Finally, in June 2023, at the Xbox Showcase, the studio announced that the new chapter in the Senua story would come out in 2024. At the Xbox Developer Direct event in January 2024, the studio announced that Senua would return on May 21, 2024. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II uses Unreal Engine 5 and will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. This time, Ninja Theory won’t self-publish the game, as Xbox Game Studios will publish the sequel.

Story
Ninja Theory hasn’t revealed details about the new game’s plot. We have only learned that it will continue the story of Senua, a Pict warrior suffering from psychosis. Consequently, she has difficulties determining what is real and is experiencing delusions and hallucinations. In the first Hellblade game, Senua travels to Hellheim to retrieve the souls of her beloved, Dillion. The sequel takes her to Iceland, where she will try to save victims of tyranny. Once again, she will face living enemies as well as her inner demons. It’s also worth mentioning that Melina Juergens reprises her role as Senua.

Gameplay
The first game uses unconventional mechanics that help players feel what Senua and people suffering from mental difficulties feel. Primarily, it falsely proclaims that if the player fails too many times, their saves will be deleted; thus, all the progress will be lost. We wonder if Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will also use such unorthodox features to strengthen its message. The same trick might not work twice, so Ninja Theory should use another way to put players in a state of constant fear and tension.
Senua’s Sacrifice looked so good that it was hard to believe that it was an indie game. The sequel also sets the graphic bar extremely high as it takes advantage of the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. Moreover, costumes used in games are tailored and then scanned into the game.
