Layers of Fear: The horror series returns

08 April 2023

Layers of Fear, originally titled Layers of Fears, wraps up the horror series created by Bloober Team, as it includes the previous installments as well as entirely new stories.

The final layer of fear

Layers of Fear is a series of horror games created by Bloober Team. The first installment was released in 2016, and its sequel came out three years later. Now the studio wants to give the series a proper finale. The new release, also titled Layers of Fear, will include remakes of both games and the Inheritance extensions. Moreover, it will present two previously untold chapters called The Final Note and The Lighthouse. Let’s wrap up everything we know about the project so far, including its release date, changes, new content, and gameplay.

Release date

Initially, Bloober Team announced that the game would come out in early 2023. Later, the release date was set for June. Unfortunately, the exact date hasn’t been revealed yet.

Content

Bloober Team revealed its new adventure game in August 2022 during Gamescom. It was initially announced as Layers of Fears, but the studio renamed it Layers of Fear in February, which may be confusing as the upcoming release shares the title with the first installment in the series. Fortunately, things got explained when the developer cast some light on what the new game would be.

The 2023 incarnation of Layers of Fear will include remakes of both Layers of Fear and Layers of Fear 2, as well as the Inheritance DLC and some brand-new content.

Remakes

The new Layers of Fear game uses Unreal Engine 5 instead of Unity (LoF) and Unreal Engine 4 (LoF 2). Thanks to this change, the stories of The Painter and The Actor will look much more realistic because players can enjoy 4K resolution as well as visual features such as ray tracing and HDR.

The other modification provided by the remakes sounds even more intriguing, as the new versions of Layers of Fear and Layers of Fear 2 will offer new mechanics. Bloober Team hasn’t specified yet what mechanics will debut in remakes, but we believe it will be something that alters gameplay a little, encouraging players who have already completed both psychological horrors to buy its new version. According to the developers, all the chapters will be connected and blend seamlessly. Therefore, we assume that the new Layers of Fear will be one big game combining all stories rather than a bundle of separate releases.

The Final Note and The Lighthouse

Naturally, new mechanics and a bland of all the stories told in Layers of Fear games sound interesting. However, the part of Bloober Team’s forthcoming project that we’re most excited about is the fresh content: The Final Note and The Lighthouse.

The Final Note is a brand new expansion to the original LoF story. The base game allowed players to assume the role of The Painter, while the Inheritance DLC added his daughter’s perspective. This time, we will have a chance to experience this story through the eyes of the third protagonist, The Painter’s wife. This way, we can learn more details and dive deeper into the artist’s tormented mind.

The Lighthouse seems even more compelling as it’s an entirely new story focused on a protagonist referred to us as The Writer. According to Bloober Team, this chapter will tie together all the entries in the Layers of Fear series.

Gameplay

The 2023 version of Layers of Fear offers new mechanics, as we’ve mentioned earlier, but the core of the gameplay will stay intact. Consequently, it remains a psychological horror adventure game that puts emphasis on narrative. Players have to explore the old mention (LoF) or cruise ship (LoF 2) to solve puzzles that push the story forward and learn more about the protagonists.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Layers of Fear titles don’t use cheap jump scares to build a tense horror atmosphere. Instead, they take advantage of detailed graphics, a mesmerizing yet disturbing soundtrack, and an environment filled with bizarre details.
