It’s time to sum up the almost bygone year of 2019. Many interesting games and DLCs has been born throughout the year. This is the first installment of our upcoming set of articles about the best games of the year. In that one we will take a closer look at the Top 5 RPG games of 2019. Games are and will be listed in no particular order. Each of these products are equally worth of trying!
Number 1
The Outer Worlds
Date of release: 25th of October
The long waited game from Obsidian Entertainment finally saw a daylight in 2019. Creators of such hits like Fallout: New Vegas or Pillars of Eternity decided this time to launch their child into the space. Settled in the future but with a heavy influence of 40s style game tosses players into bright and comfortable world. At least at the first glance. The Outer Worlds is a RPG game with a first person-perspective that relies on fast-paced, quick and agile combat. Game is driven by the fixed main story line with addition of hundreds of side-quests. There is a well-designed companion system, that allows us to have 2 AI-controlled followers, as well as a character development, which is easy to learn but has a real depth. There are naturally talents and perks waiting to be unlocked. All of them connected with the retro-futuristic setting.
Number 2
Date of release: 15th of October
The Outer Worlds and Disco Elysium were the hottest two games of October, no doubt. Each with a similar idea, but very different execution. Candy and pleasant setting of Outer Worlds was totally contradicted by grim, hopeless and depressing aura of Disco Elysium. Set in a futuristic, but bathed in apocalyptic vibe, world of Disco Elysium is really demanding. Each of our little mistakes can lead us to death. Game is heavily driven by the deep, two-sided and complex story. Our decisions are crucial to it, as they can alternate the outcomes. Set of 24 abilities makes a character development difficult and we must remember to keep a balance between them. Many difficult and demanding tests, dangerous and vicious enemies and even the environment – all of them create threat in the world of Disco Elysium.
Disco Elysium received the most awards during The Game Awards 2019 and objectively deserves a place in top 5 RPG of 2019
Number 3
Pokemon Sword/Shield
Date of release: 15th of November
Last quarter of the year was really fruitful when it comes to the RPGs. This time not so depressing as Disco Elysium. Another installment of the all-time classic game series has been created. Pokemon Sword/Shield brings us to the Galar region. Totally new, 8th generation of pocket monsters are waiting to be catched and trained. What’s new? Gigantamax allows us to turn our pet to a gigantic and dangerous beast for 3 turns. There is also a “Wild Area” – a season-cycling, open and free space for catching different pokemons. Beautiful 3D graphics, new landscapes and cities, varying environments are great, pleasing additions to the whole Pokemon experience we know and love.
Number 4
Date of release: 23rd of January
The combination of RPG and card game with the elements of rouge-like productions seems like a great mix. That’s why, probably, guys from the Mega Crit decided to create Slay The Spire. Simple but pleasant graphics allow to put the main focus on the gameplay. We assemble a deck, that is customizable by various encounters, and we make the way to the top of titular Spire. Many paths, different enemies, bosses at the end of each stage. Choose from 3 characters that represent different aspects of combat and reach the top.

Date of release: 10th of September
We finish our Gamivo Top 5 list of 2019 RPGs with a very ambitious project – Greedfall. Set in a world stylized to the American 17th century but with the elements of magic and fantasy. In Greedfall there are no classes, making the development process much more free and non-schematic. However there are over 100 skills and abilities ranging from white weapons, firearms, to stealth, barter or diplomacy. Diplomacy and charisma has a special place in Greedfall as you can resolve many quests and problems without entering the combat. Greedfall offers a sandboxy world full of opportunities. The sky is the limit and it all depends on your creativity and the approach to different tasks- that’s why Greedfall is on our Top 5 RPG game list of 2019
