Will Nintendo Release Switch Pro?

26 January 2021

Whispers, rumors and theories abound, but Nintendo hasn’t released any official confirmation that there will be a Switch Pro model in the near future. If one is released, it would likely be set for some time in 2021 at the earliest, but it could be as far as three years away. Nintendo has neither confirmed nor denied any plans for an upgraded Switch system.

Anticipation for the next generation Nintendo Switch hybrid system is burning hot, fueled in part by reports from overseas that a mini-LED display will be included on a Switch 2 release. Meanwhile, gamers have speculated that the company could include new features such 4K gaming support, but options such as 8K gaming and ray tracing probably wouldn’t be forthcoming.

Switch

Nintendo released the Switch on March 3, 2017, followed by the same model with an upgraded battery in Aug. 2019. The Switch Lite quickly followed on Sept. 20, 2019. Gamers have extrapolated from those dates that it’s time for a Switch 2/Switch Pro in 2021.

If a Switch Pro is released, it’s probably a safe bet to assume a base model will cost close to $300, with the Lite version priced at about $200. Individuals within the gaming industry estimate the Switch Pro/Switch 2 would cost closer to $400.

With no official notices from Nintendo, gamers, pundits, and those in the industry can do nothing but speculate and those guesses about any new Switch release run the gamut. At this point, potential differences and/or upgrades are more of a wish list than anything else.

Some predict a substantial power boost for the console while a report from Inverse claims that leaked specs include 4K video support, two USB-C ports, 64GB SSD, and a Nvidia Tegra Xavier processor. Inverse also claimed that the Switch Pro would no longer be a portable system and would be a console strictly for use with a TV.

To further muddy the waters, prognosticators are predicting a mini-LED display that would increase contrast, improve responsiveness, and be more energy efficient. Still others foresee a Nintendo Switch Pro that doesn’t make a significant leap in evolution and that 4K support wouldn’t be a good fit for the console, while suggesting that a dual screen could be in the offing. The top features gamers want to see are:
4K support for TV mode
1080p handheld play
More ergonomic controller
True Bluetooth support to pair additional devices

The sad fact is that Nintendo hasn’t released any official word on a release of a Switch Pro or any other upgrade to the system. The platform has proven to be enormously popular and Nintendo typically takes the “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” approach. A Nintendo Switch 2 may be in the future of gaming, but until the company is relatively sure of success, a Switch 2 remains in the category of a beautiful dream.
