Video games canceled in 2024

22 November 2024

We have gotten many outstanding games in 2024. Unfortunately, we have also received far less optimistic news in the last few months. Here’s our list of the most promising games we will never play because they were canceled in 2024.

Unannounced games

We will concentrate on the officially announced or already released games, so the list doesn’t include titles that vanished in the early stage, sometimes before even getting a title. However, it’s worth noticing that some potentially intriguing games have been scrapped in 2024. For instance, Remedy dropped the mysterious project known under the codename Kestrel to focus on its already-established IPs, and Blizzard canceled its unannounced survival game.

Overwatch 2 PvE Mode

  • Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
  • Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment

This is not an entire game, but the new story mode for Overwatch 2 was the main (and probably the sole) reason behind releasing it as a sequel, not just an update. No wonder this new narrative-driven experience in the Overwatch universe was the most anticipated feature.

However, it was ill-fated from the beginning. First, the additional mode had been postponed, and the game debuted without it in October 2022. For the first three PvE missions, players had to wait until August 2023. To play them, players had to buy a $15 bundle. Blizzard wasn’t satisfied with the sales numbers and, around March 2024, canceled the whole PvE project, leaving fans disappointed and yearning for what could have been an epic cooperative experience in Blizzard’s colorful world.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland

  • Developer: Red Storm
  • Publisher: Ubisoft

Ubisoft’s The Division franchise has gained a loyal following for its engaging tactical gameplay. Heartland, a free-to-play spin-off, was set to explore new territories and gameplay mechanics. Ubisoft officially announced it in May 2021.

Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland entered late development stages, and some players even had a chance to test it. However, ultimately, Ubisoft changed its mind and dropped the project, announcing this sad information in March 2024. The cancellation was a significant setback for fans eager to explore a fresh take on The Division’s post-apocalyptic setting.

Life by You

  • Developer: Paradox Tectonic
  • Publisher: Paradox Interactive

Life by You was supposed to dethrone the Sims series. Paradox’s game aimed to revolutionize the life simulation genre, promising a highly customizable and interactive world. Developed by a team of industry veterans, this game generated a lot of buzz among simulation fans.

Its development was well underway, and Paradox planned its early access release. Initially, Life by You was supposed to come out in September 2023. Its debut was postponed until March 2024, and then Paradox moved it again to June 4, 2024. On June 17, instead of revealing the fourth date, the company announced the cancellation of the game. According to Fredrik Wester, Paradox Interactive CEO, the game wouldn’t be able to meet their expectations, and a satisfying version was too far away. The Paradox Tectonic studio was shut down the next day.

Concord

  • Developer: Firewalk Studios
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

It’s a particular story because when we talk about canceled games, we usually have in mind projects that were dropped before their releases. This case is different. Concord was a first-person online hero shooter developed by Firewalk Studios and financed by Sony. Its goal was to compete with established titles such as Overwatch and Apex Legends and become the foundation of a Star Wars-level franchise. The plan was ambitious, but the reality proved brutal.

Concord was released on August 23, 2024. The game that devoured 400 million dollars of budget and eight years of development remained available for less than two weeks. On September 6, the servers went offline, and all sold copies were refunded. There wasn’t much to repay because Concord failed to cut a noteworthy part of the market dominated by free-to-play titles. Also, mixed reviews and limited marketing added their bricks to the wall of a complete disaster. If someone had had hope that Concord could regroup and return, Sony crashed them by closing Firewalk Studios in October 2024.
