Story

What is Forspoken about? The story introduces Frey Holland, a young woman from New York who is teleported to an unknown realm. This fantastic land named Athia is ruled by ruthless rulers: our enemies. Frey seems to be Athia’s last hope: but don’t worry, she isn’t going to be completely helpless. Frey is equipped with a magic bracelet that lets her perform spectacular combat sequences.

Moreover, Frey can chat with her enchanted weapon. Cool, isn’t it? The idea of a modern character thrown into a fantasy world sounds great, however, this contrast might be annoying for some players. Since Forspoken is an action-RPG title, let’s move on to its gameplay.

Gameplay

Since Forspoken is all about stunning visuals and mouth-dropping combat, let’s take a closer look at what kind of mechanics the game has to offer. The magic Frey wields can be used to cast both offensive and defensive spells. The number of spells could cause a headache! For instance, players can conjure weapons and use elements according to their will.

combat

The spells look incredible, but they do share some similarities with Final Fantasy combat. They are huge and sometimes even over-the-top! Combined with parkour, Forspoken gameplay feels fun, but it’s not entirely original. If you do, however, enjoy Square Enix’s approach to combat, you’ll definitely enjoy Forspoken as well.

using spells to travel

The parkour we’ve mentioned earlier not only looks cool but also plays an important role in terms of traversing the huge world of Athia. Using our magical abilities, we can smoothly travel long distances fast.

Graphics

It would be a lie to say that Forspoken doesn’t look good, but the world presented so far feels quite…empty. It is huge and beautiful, but the locations do not always feel lively enough.

views

There’s some variety to them though: we’ve got both towns, cities, plains, forests, and a large dose of odd structures and of course, magic. We’ve quite enjoyed the character design too: the characters or monsters look original and fit to the general theme.

Forspoken demo: opinions and impressions

Although the hype for this title was great, it seems it diminished slightly after players accessed the demo version. There’s a visible split in the community as well: some believe Forspoken is a nice refreshing title, and others think it’s a huge and empty game that will quickly bore any player.

enemy monsters

We do think that both of these opinions are valid. On one side, we are happy that Forspoken is about to bring some freshness compared to recently published games. The story seems interesting and combat simply feels fun to experience. On the other hand, games that often put so much focus on elaborate combat, fail to properly develop other parts of the game. Nevertheless, it was only a demo version. We are more than sure that to give an unbiased and complete opinion, we have to wait for the release.

Trailers

If you haven’t played the demo or want to see what the game looks like, we’ve got some trailers for you. The cinematic trailer shows a beautifully rendered combat scene of our main character. The gameplay trailer features a more detailed look at the story and Frey’s abilities. We can also see the original character designs and some of the fantastic outfits they wear.
