South Park: Snow Day!: Release date and gameplay changes

23 March 2024

South Park: Snow Day is a continuation of successful RPGs set in the world of the famous cartoon series. However, its gameplay alters the formula in many ways. Let’s take a look at the latest adventure of Stan, Kyle, Kenny, Cartman, and the New Kid.

South Park: Snow Day gameplay

Former South Park video games were genuinely good. Both Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole successfully recreated the spirit of the series and used fun mechanics. Maybe the turn-based combat wasn’t particularly sophisticated, especially in the older title, but you don’t play South Park video games for a top-notch fighting experience. However, the new release overhauls the combat completely, which is most probably the result of assigning the project to a new studio.

The first game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, a studio known for awesome RPGs such as Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, and Pillars of Eternity, to mention only a few. The second was created by Ubisoft San Francisco, a subsidiary studio of one of the biggest publishers. None returned for the new game as Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the series creators, signed a new deal. As a result, THQ Nordic became the game’s publisher, while Question took on the task of developing the game. It’s a small studio that previously released a co-op horror called The Blackout Club and The Magic Circle that allows players to control a fictional game’s protagonist, who must help its creators finish the development. Question doesn’t mention the South Park title on its website, which is odd.

The new developer changed some of the most distinctive features of the South Park video games. First of all, South Park Snow Day is not a 2D game. This time, we will explore a 3D world. Consequently, the characters gained an additional dimension. I really hope this works out in the game because, on screenshots, it looks strange to everyone who got used to how South Park residents look.

Another notable gameplay change regards combat. Snow Day is not an RPG but an action-adventure game. Thus, it also ditches turn-based battles. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad change, as real-time fights may make gameplay more dynamic.

South Park Snow Day: Co-op

Unlike The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole, the new game features multiplayer. South Park Snow Day offers a co-op mode for up to four players. Hence, instead of teaming up with AI-controlled characters, you can forge a team with your friends.

South Park: Snow Day story

Both previous games cleverly used the series’ story arcs to prepare a fitting setting for an RPG game. Stick of Truth is based on episodes where Cartman, Kyle, Kenny, Stan, and their friends played a role-playing campaign, whereas the plot about the gang trying to establish their own superhero franchise inspired The Fractured But Whole. Snow Day returns to the older game. Thus, Princess Kenny, Wizard King Cartman, High Jew Elf Kyle, and other South Park characters’ fantasy alter egos return. Also, players will once again take on the role of the New Kid. The protagonist is fully customizable, so you can choose their appearance and statistics.

The game takes place on an eponymous day when a blizzard forced the cancellation of the school. Our little hero may enjoy the day off, but ultimately, they will have to fight to prevent the endless winter from taking over their hometown.
