Release date and platforms

The original Slay the Spire debuted in 2019 on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Later, it came out on other platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and mobile devices. Hence, I assume Slay the Spire 2 will eventually be available on multiple systems, even though it has been announced only for PC.

The exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, but the early access version of Slay the Spire 2 is supposed to debut later this year. Like the first game, the sequel was created by Mega Crit. However, the publisher has changed. The first game was published by Humble Bundle, but the developer has decided to self-publish the sequel.

Slay the Spire 2 Gameplay

The developers promise some new ways to play Slay the Spire, but they haven’t revealed any details. The early access version probably won’t offer many revolutionary gameplay changes. Of course, we’ll get new characters and cards, but the core should stay intact. Consequently, we’ll get a roguelike game using deckbuilding as its essential mechanic.

In case you’ve missed the original game, in Slay the Spire, players try to climb the eponymous spire. On each floor, they must decide which path to take. Avoiding enemies is not necessarily the best strategy because killing them grants valuable rewards, including powerful cards. You can also improve your deck in shops. If you’re lucky, you can find a treasure chest or a random event granting valuable cards. Building a deck around specific synergies is key, so sometimes it’s wise to deny offered cards. Whichever tactics players adopt, they should make sure to have an effective deck before fighting a boss waiting at the end of each of the four acts.

You don’t want to mess with something as good as the Slay the Spire gameplay. However, I assume that some new elements will appear in the sequel. Slay the Spire 2 is powered by Godot, while its predecessor used Unity. The game’s engine change can give the developers an extra incentive to try something new or shake some things up.

Characters

The first game included four preconstructed characters: Silent, Watcher, Ironclad, and Defect. Each of them has different statistics, decks, and unique abilities. Early trailers reveal that Slay the Spire 2 also has four playable heroes. Ironclad and Silent are coming back, accompanied by a scythe-wielding skeleton called Necrobinder and some unnamed guy with a star-shaped head.
