Skull and Bones: Ubisoft’s ambitious sea voyage is about to start

09 February 2024

Ubisoft, the name synonymous with iconic franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, is about to release Skull and Bones. This highly anticipated game has been making waves in the gaming community. What can we expect from this title?

Like a stormy ocean

Since its announcement in 2017, Skull and Bones has undergone significant transformations from its initial concept. Crafted by Ubisoft, the game has been on a long voyage, with doubts arising among players as to whether it would ever be released. However, the developers have promised an authentic and immersive pirate experience that will leave players on the edge of their seats, including Ubisoft’s CEO assuring that Skull and Bones is a ‘quadruple-A game’. But will this title become the next favorite pirate game like the Sea of Thieves?

Gameplay mechanics

Skull and Bones is not your typical open-world action RPG. It offers a co-op pirate experience where players can rise from being rookie pirates into legends of the seas from the coast of Africa to the West Indies. Players can expect to get their hands dirty with naval combat, treasure hunting, and building up their reputation among the pirate community.

One standout feature that sets Skull and Bones apart from other games in its genre is its focus on naval warfare. Players will have to master the art of maneuvering their ships, using the wind, and choosing the right weaponry to emerge victorious in intense sea battles. Managing your ship won’t be possible without your crew. Taking care of your crewmates is crucial for survival on the waters. Those won’t be friendly: players will have to watch out not only for other pirates but also deadly wildlife and unwelcoming weather conditions.

Setting sail on the open sea, players will have to keep a keen eye out for any nearby ships that may pose a threat. With its realistic and dynamic weather system, the game challenges players to navigate through these dangers This surely adds an element of unpredictability and excitement to every voyage. But it’s not all about combat in Skull and Bones. The game also puts a strong emphasis on exploration and treasure hunting.

Naval combat in Skull and Bones

Combat in Skull and Bones is probably the most exciting part of the game. Players will have a chance to customize their ships with different weapons, sails, and armor to suit their playstyle. The combat could be characterised by five aspects:

  • Real-time: Battles are fought in real-time, requiring quick thinking and strategic adjustments.
  • Ship-based: Combat focuses on maneuvering and utilizing your ship’s weaponry.
  • Focus on positioning: Positioning your ship to maximize firepower and minimize damage is crucial.
  • Multiple ship types: Choose from various ships, each with strengths and weaknesses in combat.
  • Customization: Upgrade and customize your ship’s weapons and armor for specific tactics. You’ll also be able to change their looks purely for aesthetic reasons and…add pets to your crew.

Multiplayer aspects

Becoming a pirate legend sounds like something that requires some teamwork. Skull and Bones can be played solo or with a group of up to two people. They will be able to take part in contracts with shared rewards and achievements.

Seasonal content

The game already received a roadmap for year 1. The roadmap includes information about four seasons that will be abundant in events, new ships, cosmetic items, and new opportunities to grow in power. You are probably wondering if these events will be locked behind paid battle passes: don’t worry, as we’ve read on the official website, the aforementioned content will be free! It’s actually a piece of good news since paid content, battle passes and microtransactions seem to have dominated the world of gaming.

  • Season 1: Raging Tides
  • Season 2: Chorus of Havoc
  • Season 3: Into the Dragon’s Wake
  • Season 4: Shadows of the Deep

Release Date and Platforms

After years of anticipation, Skull and Bones is finally ready to hoist its colors. The game will be available from February 16 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Skull and Bones will be available in two editions: Standard and Premium. The more expensive version contains a 3-day early access, premium bonus packs, two extra missions, artbook, a soundtrack, a smuggler pass token, and a pre-order bonus.

A new bestseller or a flop?

Based on previous iterations and promotional material, players can expect an immersive pirate world filled with danger, adventure, and treasure. The game’s focus on naval combat sets it apart from other open-world action RPGs and promises a unique gaming experience. Will that be enough for this title to win hearts of gamers?

Only time will tell if Skull and Bones will be the next big hit from Ubisoft or if it will sink into the depths of the gaming ocean. But one thing is for sure – the gaming community is eagerly waiting to set sail on this ambitious voyage.
