Homeworld 3: The iconic RTS franchise returns

06 February 2024

The upcoming release of Homeworld 3 is an important event for players who love strategy games. Let’s take a closer look at its premiere date and other details.

The series

The Homeworld franchise debuted in 1999. The first game in this strategy series created by Relic Entertainment was praised for its gameplay and fully 3D graphics that set new visual standards. Players also cherished the original lore revolving around the efforts of a humanoid race called the Kushan to reclaim their home planet of Hiigara from the Taiidan Empire. Homeworld 2, also developed by Relic and published by Sierra, came out in 2003. The story introduces a new enemy called the Vaygr. The sequel recreated the success of the original Homeworld while raising the bar in terms of audio and video.

In the next few years, the rights to the Homeworld franchise changed owners several times. Finally, Gearbox Software acquired them in 2013. The studio remastered both games, releasing them as Homeworld HD, later renamed Homeworld Remastered Collection. Gearbox allowed Blackbird Interactive to create an original game set in the Homeworld universe. It resulted in the release of Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak, a spin-off set before the original game. The game came out in 2016 and was warmly received. Its sales numbers convinced Gearbox Software to greenlight the development of Homeworld 3.

Release date

Homeworld 3 was officially revealed in 2019. Unfortunately, it has been postponed several times since the announcement. First, it was delayed to early 2023, then to February 2023, and finally, in December, Gearbox declared that Homeworld 3 would come out on March 8, 2024. We hope this date will stand.

Gameplay and multiplayer

Homeworld 3 was developed by Blackbird Interactive, which, in the meantime, was joined by some former Relic employees. As a result, some of the creators of the original Homwerowld games and the 2000 spin-off, Homeworld Cataclysm (aka Homeworld Emergence), were part of the team behind Homeworld 3. It included Rob Cunningham (design director), Martin Cirulis (writer), and Paul Ruskay (composer). The return of the old guard doesn’t mean that the game won’t offer anything new. For instance, 3D terrain is a fresh feature that makes its series debut in Homeworld 3. It sounds like a genuine fan addition because it should make space battles even more exciting. It requires players to take into account obstacles such as asteroids but also adds interesting possibilities, such as using gigantic wrecks, called megaliths, to set an ambush or sneak past the enemies to attack them from behind. Moreover, damages that your ships take stay on them throughout the campaign. Another noteworthy change is the 3-player online co-op mode, which features roguelike elements.

Commanders who want to test their skills against human opponents will also find something for them, as Homeworld 3 features 1v1 and battles. Players who want to alter their experience can use the in-game editor to modify ships, maps, and myriad other things. Furthermore, Homeworld 3 supports modes; hence, you can install modifications created by other players.

Plot

Blackbird launched a very successful crowdfunding campaign in 2019. The backers could complete the survey that helped write the game’s story; hence, we may rest certain that the plot meets fans’ expectations. Homeworld 3 continues the events from previous games but is set a hundred years after its predecessor. This time, you won’t have to fight a new race or faction because the danger is much more severe. The whole universe is threatened by a mysterious scourage called the Anomaly. Before defeating this danger, you will have to understand its nature. The plot has always been a strong side of Homeworld games, so we believe that the new installment will make no exception and provide us with a compelling sci-fi tale.
