The future of Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat: What might the future of the series be?

Now Trending 06/07/2021

It’s hard to argue that Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the best installments in the famous fighting series. NetherRealm recently announced that the game would get no more DLCs nor other new content. Should the MK fans be worried?

NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. Since then, the game has gotten 12 new characters and numerous other features such as skins, Friendships, and new story content. Now the Ed Boon’s studio announced that it’s going to focus on its future game.

It’s disappointing news for many MK fans since they would definitely like to have their game developed for years. Especially given the fact that other fighting games like Street Fighter V or Tekken 7 have been getting new DLCs for more than five years. On the other hand, Mortal Kombat 11 is marvelous as it is. It contains more than 30 playable characters, diverse game modes, and polished gameplay. The game seems finished, and it would be great to get something completely new.

To be honest, we’re very excited looking forward to the announcement of the NetherRealm new project. We’re sure that it won’t be Mortal Kombat 12. Nonetheless, we know something about the next installment in the Fatality series. The Aftermath’s ending suggests that the series is going to explore the Great Kung Lao era. It could be a bold yet risky choice as this setting will demand introducing some new characters. Maybe it will even contain some references to the unfinished Mortal Kombat Conquest TV show. It was virtually the only part of the MK franchise exploring this period. But what will we get before MK 12?

Injustice 3

Previously NetherRealm filled the gaps between Mortal Kombat releases with Injustice. This series featuring DC characters has been well-received thanks to its entertaining gameplay and surprisingly deep and compelling plot. It also served as a testing field where the developers could try some more unconventional features. Considering that, Injustice 3 seems like a more obvious choice to be the next NetherRealm project. Additionally, the upcoming Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader can boost the game’s sales.

Marvel Game

According to rumors, NetherRealm won’t release a game featuring DC but Marvel characters, DC’s archrival. Even Ed Boon has added fuel to those speculations by twitting about James Gunn working on Marvel and DC movies alike. Recently we could see Iron Man, Deadpool, or Spider-Man in crossover tag-team games such as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. We wouldn’t mind having them in a more mature release. At first we thought that it would be an impossible turn of events as NetherRealm is a part of Warner Bros. The merger between Warner and Discovery, however, can open up some new possibilities.

Another MK game

As we said, we don’t think that we’ll get Mortal Kombat 12 anytime soon. Anyhow, NetherRealm may develop a spin-off of its most successful franchise. It could, for instance, be a beat ’em up fighting game resembling MK Shaolin Monks or the MK Armageddon Konquest mode. Co-op games have been popular lately; therefore, Ed Boon can surprise fans with a less obvious release.

End of support for Mortal Kombat 11 isn’t the lone important news about the series. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge is going to have a sequel. Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms should be released by the end of 2021 on Blu-Ray and streaming services. The first trailer looks exciting and bloody.

Sadly, the fate of a possible Mortal Kombat movie sequel remains uncertain. The film’s ending teases the future story surrounding Johny Cage. However, 2021’s Mortal Kombat’s box office and reviews may turn out not to be good enough to guarantee the series another shot.
