Lords of the Fallen is a role-playing game that can be very confusing because it shares a title with its predecessor, released in 2014. Let’s see if the reboot copies the original game in more ways than just the name.
Release date
Lords of the Fallen will be released on October 13, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC. The original game’s publisher, CI Games, reprises its role; however, unlike the older one, which was developed by Deck13, the sequel was created by Hexworks.
Confusing title
We must admit that we’re still confused by the fact that the new game was named the same as the first installment. Creative director Cezar Virtosu revealed that Hexworks initially intended to name it Lords of the Fallen: The Dark Crusade. This plan had been dropped, and the game was officially announced as The Lords of the Fallen in 2018. It wasn’t a significant difference, but the “the” part could help players distinguish both titles. However, in March 2023, Hexworks revealed Lords of the Fallen as the final title.
Apparently, Hexworks decided to call it simply Lords of the Fallen to highlight the fact that it’s a reboot of the series. It may be confusing, but a smart move since Elden Ring introduced Souls-like games to the mainstream, and players may be more eager to embark on a completely new adventure than buy a direct sequel to the game that they have never played.
Gameplay
Like its predecessor, Lords of the Fallen (2023) is an action RPG with a camera placed behind the protagonist’s back. Dark Souls fans should feel at home as the game features many mechanics inspired by FromSoftware’s genre-shaping titles. Therefore, you have to be prepared for challenging combat against enormous bosses. Defeating those formidable opponents requires learning their attacks and flawlessly taking advantage of every mistake.

In Lords of the Fallen, players have access to over 100 different melee weapons, but steel is not the only option. Alternatively, you can practice magic and use offensive spells against your opponents instead. You can also use magic to enhance your avatar’s powers. And speaking of the avatar, we have to mention that Lords of the Fallen allows players to use a wide selection of cosmetics to build and customize their unique protagonists. The game features nine classes to choose from, but so far, only three of them have been revealed:
- Knight,
- Rogue,
- Fire Apprentice.
Lords of the Fallen (2014) also featured nine classes, but it remains unknown if any of them will return in the reboot. On this dark journey, you will develop your character’s stats and upgrade weapons to prepare your avatar to go toe to toe with unspeakable nightmares.
World and story
The game is set in a dark fantasy universe called Mournstead. You will assume the role of one of the Dark Crusaders, who have to travel across the realms of the living and the dead to overpower the resurrected demon god, Adyr. The reboot’s map is approximately five times bigger than the world available in Lords of the Fallen (2014). Moreover, it allows players to explore two parallel universes. You will travel through Axiom, the realm of the living, and Umbral, the realm of the dead. Both worlds are equally perilous and provide brutal challenges you’ll have to overcome.
Thanks to a magic lantern, the protagonist can shift between those two realms, so you can see two completely different versions of the same locations reach otherwise inaccessible places or affect your foes. Furthermore, if you get defeated in Axiom, you don’t die but shift to Umbral instead. This mechanic, as well as the ability to travel across two parallel universes, reminds us of the Legacy of Kain series, where Raziel has similar power and shifts between material and spectral planes.

Multiplayer
In addition to a solo experience, Lords of the Fallen (2023) offers online elements. You can test your skills in PvP multiplayer mode or even complete the campaign in cooperation with another player. Furthermore, other players can invade your adventure, which is another well-known feature of FromSoftware games.
