Mafia: The Old Country was developed by Hangar 13, the studio that merged with the authors of the first two Mafia games, 2K Czech (formerly Illusion Softworks), in 2017. Hence, the game should remain faithful to its roots. The upcoming game is available on PC, Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5. In April, some language versions of a blog post about the Hangar 13 panel at PAX East 2025 revealed that The Old Country would premiere on August 8, 2025. This information has been removed from the article, but some gamers were fast enough to notice it and share it with the world.
Mafia: The Old Country. Story
All Mafia games were set in fictional cities modeled after real American metropolises: Lost Heaven (Chicago), Empire Bay (New York City), and New Bordeaux (New Orleans). The first game took players to the 1930s, its sequel covered the period from 1945 to 1961, and the third installment made another fast forward to 1968. Hence, players assumed Mafia IV would follow this pattern, placing its action in the 70s or 80s. Meanwhile, Hangar 13 has decided to break with tradition. For the first time in the series’ history, Mafia takes us outside the US. It is set in Sicily, the cradle of Italian organized crime. Moreover, it explores the early 1900s, so it’s set before all previous installments. However, the upcoming game also features a fictional city, San Celeste, which was mentioned in Mafia and briefly appeared in Mafia II.

We will follow a new protagonist, Enzo Favara, who takes on an opportunity to join the Torrisi crime family. He has to prove his worth and climb the ladder of the organization.
Mafia: The Old Country. Gameplay
Mafia: The Old Country is a third-player perspective action-adventure game. Hence, regarding the gameplay, the fourth game follows the way paved by its predecessors. It’s supposed to provide players with a cinematic experience. It usually means a high number of cutscenes and linear gameplay. Players craving pure action and fans of open worlds may not be happy. I count on a well-written story, so if The Old Country delivers a compelling plot, I won’t complain about the lack of freedom. Furthermore, although Mafia and Mafia II are linear, they don’t lack exciting shootouts and pursuits.

The Mafia creators have always put emphasis on historical accuracy. The Old Country will also provide a realistic experience. Consequently, players’ arsenal will be limited to weapons of the era, such as a stiletto, the Bodeo Model 1889 revolver, and the iconic lupara (sawed-off shotgun). Enzo will also travel by the era-accurate means of transport, including a horse and early cars.
