News about Dragon Age: Veilguard was among the most thrilling announcements at the Summer Game Fest, which took place this June. Since we’ve learned some more, it’s time to wrap up everything we know about the Dragon Age Inquisition sequel, including release date, gameplay, and the unexpected title change.
News about Dragon Age: The Veilguard – release date and platforms
Electronic Arts and BioWare haven’t announced the release date yet. They only declared that the new Dragon Age will come out this fall. The lack of the exact date may suggest that the premiere may be postponed. I won’t be surprised if The Veilguard comes out in winter or even next year.
The sure thing is the list of available platforms. We can embark on the new adventure in Thedas on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
Dragon Age Dreadwolf becomes Dragon Age: The Veilguard
BioWare announced the Inquisition sequel, known as Dragon Age Dreadwolf, in 2022. On June 6, 2024, the developer surprised everyone by announcing that they’d changed the title to Veilguard. What were the reasons? The studio explained that it wanted to put more emphasis on the heroes rather than antagonists.

“(…) to capture what this game is all about, we changed the name as the original title didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories, and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas,” stated Gary McKay, the general manager at BioWare and Dragon Age’s executive producer.
News about Dragon Age: The Veilguard – character creation
As usual, a new Dragon Age game brings a new protagonist. This time, we will follow the story of Rook. It’s a customizable character; hence, you can pick their first name, faction, skills, appearances, and all the other things that will make every Rook unique. There are three standard classes, each with multiple specializations.
- Warrior (reaper, slayer, champion),
- Rogue (duelist, saboteur, veil ranger)
- Mage
News about Dragon Age: The Veilguard – companions
The hero will lead a company that may be joined by seven possible companions.
- Neve Gallus – the detective
- Lace Harding – the scout
- Lucanis – the mage killer
- Bellara – the veil jumper
- Emmerich – the necromancer
- Davrin – the warden
- Taash – the dragon hunter
Some of them we may remember from previous installments, and BioWare promises that all have deep backgrounds. The protagonist can also romance their companions.
As you can see, one notable name is missing from the companion list. Varric Tethras, who played a significant role in Dragon Age II and Dragon Age: Inquisition, appears in the trailer and the official gameplay reveal. However, he apparently can’t join Rook on the journey. Fans speculate that the dwarven rogue dies somewhere at the beginning of the adventure. Of course, it’s not the only possible explanation, but this theory seems very likely.

News about Dragon Age: The Veilguard – gameplay
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is an action roleplaying game. After watching the official gameplay trailer, I have a feeling that the focus is more on action. Of course, I can be mistaken. However, the movement-to-movement combat shown in the trailer is very dynamic. It resembles action-adventure games such as Gotham Knights, where the player deals some blows, jumps away, and repeats this sequence multiple times.
To use special abilities, give commands to your companions, and blow combos, players use a new feature, the ability wheel. Using it pauses the action and lets you plan your next moves.
