Civilization 7: Release date, gameplay, and more

11 October 2024

Unlike many sequels, Civilization 7 will make some significant changes to the proven formula of the famous 4X series. Let’s take a look at the altered gameplay, new civilizations, and other features.

Civilization 7: Release date and platforms

2K officially revealed the new installment in the famous strategy series in June 2024 at the Summer Game Fest. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will premiere on February 11, 2025. The game will be widely available as it comes out on PC, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Civilization 7 Gameplay

Most long-running franchises tend to play it safe and introduce only visual enhancements and minor gameplay changes in subsequent installments. The upcoming Civilization takes the more risky road. The introduction of ages is probably the most significant new feature presented by Civilization VII. In the game, history is divided into three eras:

  • Antiquity Age – the dawn of early civilizations
  • Exploration Age – the time of discovery
  • Modern Age – era of technological growth started by the steam engine

Players pick one leader who accompanies them throughout all three ages. However, after advancing to the next period, they choose a new faction. Hence, instead of playing one, you control three civilizations. Each blooms on the remains of its predecessors as players decide which legacies of the old nation the new one inherits. The list of available civilizations depends on the leader, previous nation, and meeting requirements. For instance, the player needs three horse resources to unlock Mongolia in the Exploration Age.

Each age provides a slightly different experience as it includes specific resources, mechanics, abilities, units, buildings, and parts of the map available for exploration. Completing given objectives grants players unique bonuses during the transition to the next age. Advancing to the next age should take approximately 150 to 200 turns or three to four hours of gameplay. Transitioning to a new era provides a technological boost, which can significantly improve the situation for players struggling with their current civilization. However, players who make their nation flourish are rewarded with more legacy points and other bonuses.

The crisis system is another novelty introduced in Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. Before the dusk of each age, a crisis emerges and intensifies toward the end of the era. Players and other civilizations have to adapt to this challenging environment. According to the game’s developers, there is no one right way of reacting in such dire situations. Therefore, players can try out countless strategies and ways of handling the crisis.
