Players who love strategies set in the Middle Ages have a lot of titles to choose from. However, Manor Lords brings to the table something fresh as it intricately blends city-building and real-time strategy elements. Hence, we’re taking a closer look at the game created by Slavic Magic.

Manor Lords release date

Manor Lords is a strategy game developed by a Polish studio, Slavic Magic. Players will have a chance to start their medieval adventure on April 26, 2024. Currently, the early access version of the game is available only on PC. Its full release will come out also on Xbox consoles, but the PlayStation port is not on the horizon.

Manor Lords gameplay and mechanics

At first glance, Manor Lords seems like a love child of Sim City and Age of Empires II. This is because the game features the base mechanics typical of city-building games and real-time strategies. As a result, you must take care of planning your settlement instead of raising buildings clumsy but quickly to produce a great army that will wipe out your enemy.

Players are tasked with constructing and managing their own manor. To turn your humble village into a prospering city, you’ll not only have to tame your neighbors with your army but also take care of production chains, trade routes, and other aspects usually omitted in RTS games.

For instance, you can’t seed the same field with the same grains because it will make the soil less fertile. Players’ actions have an effect on other resources, such as wood and wild game.

Battles

Every medieval leader needs an army. Therefore, you’ll have to recruit and train your faithful troops. Manor Lords features real-time battles, where tactics and terrain play a crucial role, so in those terms, it resembles many other strategy games. However, your army proves worthy not only against other nations’ forces. Sometimes, you must use your warriors to extinguish the flame of rebellion or deal with bandits. Besides, soldiers in Manor Lords aren’t as dispensable as in other titles because each fallen knight decreases the population of your city.

Historical accuracy in Manor Lords

Even though the exact period of the game is not set, Manor Lords stands out for its emphasis on historical accuracy. It applies to many aspects, including structures, units, social hierarchies, and economic systems.

Manor Lords uses various technologies to achieve realism and historical accuracy. It includes motion capture that provides natural movement and photogrammetry that allows transferring existing structures to video games. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a terrific example of how amazing the effect of using this technology can be.

As you can see, Manor Lords offers a lot of original solutions that can help it stand out from other strategy games. It’s even more impressive when you realize that the game started as one developer’s passion project. I keep my fingers crossed and count that the game will meet the expectations that can be pretty high at this point.
