Update: Life by You CANCELLED. A sims-like life simulator we are waiting for

18 June 2024

The Sims series has always been one of the best life simulations around, but their reign might end with the appearance of Life by You, a hyperrealistic simulation game from Paradox Tectonic. What is waiting for us in this title?

UPDATE: Life by You cancelled

Regrettably, the much-anticipated simulator has been scrapped. Despite boasting numerous promising features, particularly ones that could have positioned Life by You as a rival to The Sims 4, the project proved overly ambitious. Deputy CEO, Mattias Lilja has released a statement that describes the reasons for abandoning the project. A fragment of said statement can be read here:

A few weeks back, we decided to hold off on an Early Access release in order to re-evaluate Life by You, as we still felt that the game was lacking in some key areas. Though a time extension was an option, once we took that pause to get a wider view of the game, it became clear to us that the road leading to a release that we felt confident about was far too long and uncertain. This is not to say the game has not shown any promising qualities; Life by You had a number of strengths and the hard work of a dedicated team that went into realizing them. However, when we come to a point where we believe that more time will not get us close enough to a version we would be satisfied with, then we believe it is better to stop.

Of course, it’s deeply saddening to think that such a detailed life simulator won’t be a thing. We do hold onto hope that, maybe someday down the line, we’ll have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a truly realistic life simulation experience.

A new simulation game on the horizon

Boasting almost 24 years of history, The Sims series is undoubtedly the king of life simulation games. With its signature design, mechanics, and a lot of expansion packs, this series is truly iconic. Nevertheless, perhaps it’s time for a new, similar title to join the roster. Let’s take a look at Life by You, a life simulation game from Paradox Tectonic. Since the project is guided by Rod Humble, a man who worked behind the iconic The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and Second Life, we hope that Life by You will embrace the best features from all these aforementioned titles.

Realism is the new black

Life by You offers a vast, completely open world that enhances immersion by eliminating loading screens, allowing players to seamlessly explore every corner of the game universe. An essential element contributing to the game’s appeal is its art style. Instead of opting for cartoony models, Life by You presents a visually stunning and realistic world populated by equally realistic character models. The developers have put a lot of effort into creating realistic and immersive environments for players to explore. From the smallest details like weather effects to larger ones such as dynamic day and night cycles, everything is meant to immerse the player.

Furthermore, characters in the game will have the unique ability to engage with each other through the intricate dialogue system, utilizing a wide range of conversational options and responses in human language. The dialogue system also features the possible outcomes of choosing a given option. However, if you prefer more unexpected and immersive roleplay, this feature can be instantly turned off. If you want to learn more about how relationships and interactions will look, check out the official video from the developers.

Speaking of other characters, players will be able to swap between currently played avatars and lead their lives to their liking. AI will take care of the characters that are not controlled by you at the moment. That means they are going to do whatever they want, including things you might not like.

Everything is customizable

The Sims 4 are often criticized for their lack of detailed customization. Yes, despite so many items available in the game, players have rather limited options for instance in terms of changing colors. Life by You’s main selling point is the endless customization options. That will include not only color palettes but also the size and placement of the items. We will be able to even change interaction properties such as texts appearing when our character uses the objects. Incredible, isn’t it?

The upcoming game will wholeheartedly embrace the concept of modding, allowing players to customize and enhance their gaming experience. The developers have included an innovative in-game client feature that empowers players to effortlessly upload their creations and explore a plethora of content crafted by the community.

The next generation of simulation games?

Whether Life by You will turn out to be a game better than The Sims, time will tell. Maybe these titles don’t have to compete, as they represent a bit different experiences: a hyperrealistic simulation vs. a cartoony video game with its own rules and laws that wouldn’t make sense in a title like Life by You.
