Avowed is the upcoming action RPG developed by the studio behind such esteemed titles as Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2, Pillars of Eternity, and Tyranny. We gathered every piece of information regarding its gameplay, story, and release date.
Release and platforms
Players caught the first glimpse of Avowed in July 2020 at the Xbox Games showcase. The game will come out in 2024 and has the potential to be the most exciting release of the year for players who love role-playing games. Unfortunately, the precise release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Since Xbox Games Studios is Avowed’s publisher, it’s not a surprise that the game will be available on PC and Xbox Series X|S. Moreover, from its release, Avowed will be included in Game Pass. Therefore, the subscribers will play it without any additional cost. However, RPG fans who prefer Sony consoles don’t have reasons to celebrate as there is no information about the possible PlayStation 5 port of the game.

Story
The new game is also set in the world of Eora; hence, players who have played Pillar of Eternity should feel almost at home during their journey in Avowed. We assume the role of an envoy sent from the Aedyr Empire to a mysterious island called the Living Lands. Your mission is to investigate reports of a plague that is supposedly devastating this region. Just like in almost every RPG, the starting quest is just the prelude to epic adventures, many optional quests, and multiple possible endings. During their journey, players will have to make meaningful decisions and meet many interesting characters. Some of the NPC may join the protagonist’s party. They will also play a crucial role in the story.

Gameplay
Avowed uses the first-person perspective; thus, its gameplay may resemble more of The Outer Worlds than Pillars of Eternity. The combat seems interesting, as the protagonist uses magic, firearms, and melee weapons. Such variety provides tons of possibilities players can test when facing dangerous creatures in the Living Lands. The world itself isn’t one big sandbox. It reminds us of Witcher 3, featuring numerous huge areas that players can explore.
In the first trailers, Avowed looks nice; however, we’ve got some concerns regarding the animation. In particular, animations of hitting enemies with melee strikes don’t look right. We hope that Obsidian will change it before the release.
