After over a decade in darkness, Alan Wake is finally going to get a new chapter in his adventures. Moreover, he won’t be alone, as Alan Wake 2 will have two playable protagonists. Let’s recap everything we know about Remedy’s latest release.
UPDATE: August 18, 2023
Release
The long-awaited sequel to 2010’s Alan Wake was announced at The Game Awards in December 2021. The game, developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Epic Games Publishing, was initially scheduled for release on October 17, 2023. However, on August 17, Remedy announced that due to a large number of new releases, they had decided to postpone the premiere of Alan Wake 2 from October 17 to October 27. You can embark on a crusade against darkness on your PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Distribution
Probably the most unusual thing about the premiere of Alan Wake 2 is its digital-only release. It’s the first AAA game not to have physical distribution. According to Remedy representatives, most players have already completely shifted to digital distribution. Gamers, who love to have their favorite titles on the shelf, can feel disappointed. Fortunately, the compensation for the lack of physical copies of Alan Wake 2 is a considerably lower price. The game’s price tag on PC is $49.99 for the standard version and $69.99 for the deluxe edition, while the base version of most AAA games costs $69.99.

Another interesting fact is that since Epic serves as Alan Wake 2’s publisher, the game won’t be available on Steam upon its release. It may join Valve’s platform somewhere in the future, but, for instance, Alan Wake Remastered was released in 2021 and has remained an Epic Store exclusive since then.
Plot
The story of Alan Wake 2 is set 13 years after the events shown in the original game. Players will follow two characters: the eponymous writer, who has remained trapped in the Dark Place since, and Saga Anderson, an FBI agent sent to Bright Falls to investigate a series of ritualistic murders.
Gameplay
The introduction of the second protagonist is not the only ground-breaking change provided by Alan Wake 2. Unlike the first installment, which was an action-adventure game with some horror elements, the sequel is a horror survival game. Hence, we should expect fewer action sequences but a greater focus on the atmosphere of threat inspired by the Resident Evil series.
Even though the concept has been vastly overhauled, the combat still resembles what Alan Wake fans know and love. Therefore, they will have to face darkness and use a flashlight to shatter opponents’ shields before they can hurt them using firearms.

Cast
Matthew Poretta and Ilkka Villi reprise their roles as the voice and face of Alan Wake, respectively. The Finnish actor has long hair in the game’s trailer, so many fans mistook him for Jake Gyllenhaal. Melanie Liburd, whom you may know from This Is Us or Power Book II: Ghost, portrays Saga Anderson. Sam Lake, creative director at Remedy and the original face of Max Payne, also joined the cast as an FBI agent, Alex Casey. It’s intriguing because Casey is the protagonist of Wake’s bestselling novels and has a lot in common with Max Payne. Apparently, the two even share a look.
