It’s a great time for all Sonic fans. By the end of the year, they will get a new game called Sonic Superstars, and even sooner, Sonic Origins Plus, an enhanced version of the remasters of the early titles featuring the world’s fastest hedgehog, will come out. Let’s see if it’s worth buying.
Release date
Sonic Origins was released on June 23, 2022. Its upgraded versions will come out exactly one year later – on June 23, 2023 – for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. If you already own Sonic Origins, you don’t have to buy the entire release again. The additional content is also available as the Plus Expansion Pack.

Content and games
While Sonic Frontiers introduced open-world and other new features to the series, Sonic Origins returned to the roots of the franchise as a collection of the first four Sega blockbusters featuring the blue speedster and his friends. It includes digitally remastered versions of:
- Sonic the Hedgehog,
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2,
- Sonic CD,
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.
The modernized version of the game lets players enjoy the beloved side-scrolling platformers in the Classic Mode or the Anniversary Mode, which removes the limit of lives and supports the widescreen format, adds a drop dash move, and connects all games with animated cut-scenes. Moreover, Tails and Knuckles join Sonic as playable characters in all four titles (except for Knuckles in Sonic CD). Missions that unlock additional content are another interesting feature provided by Sonic Origins.
The Plus version
Sonic Origins Plus and the Plus DLC add a lot of exciting content to the game. First of all, Amy Rose appears as a playable character in all four titles already included in Sonic Origins, while Knuckles finally becomes selectable in Sonic CD. The extended version of the game also brings new challenges and modes to the table.
However, the most noteworthy thing about Sonic Origins Plus is that it adds 12 titles released between 1991 and 1996 on the Game Gear, Sega’s portable console.
- Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s the 8-bit version of the first Sonic game.
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Despite sharing its title, it’s significantly distinct from its 16-bit counterpart. The Game Gear version features different zones and a changed story.
- Sonic Chaos. It’s the first Sonic game for Game Gear that features Tails as a playable character.
- Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine. It’s an 8-bit adaptation of Sega Mega Drive puzzle games based on the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog animated series.
- Sonic Drift. It’s a kart racing game featuring Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Dr. Robotnik.
- Sonic Spinball. It’s a pinball game.
- Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble. The Sonic Chaos sequel is known for being the first game on the Sega handheld console starring Knuckles the Echidna.
- Sonic Drift 2. Originally released in 1995 sequel to Sonic Drift. It features seven characters and multiple courses based on Zones from the Sonic titles.
- Tails’ Skypatrol. This 2D side-scrolling platformer features Tails as the protagonist.
- Tails Adventure. Another spin-off of the Sonic series with Tails as the main character.
- Sonic Labyrinth. Unlike most of the installments in the franchise, this action and puzzle title uses an isometric perspective.
- Sonic Blast. Another 2D platformer that lets players thwart Dr. Robotnik’s malicious plans. Sonic Blast features Sonic and Knuckles as playable characters.
Furthermore, Sonic Origins Plus includes all the previous DLCs, such as extreme missions, backgrounds, character animations, and music.

Michael Jackson’s music
If you have played the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3, you may notice that parts of its soundtrack have been changed in the version of the game featured in Sonic Origins. The official reason hasn’t been announced. However, according to speculation, it may have something to do with Michael Jackson’s supposed involvement in composing the original score. Replacing some tracks could have been a way to avoid possible license issues.
